Bethesda Starting Development on a Fallout Movie and TV Series?

If you happen to dig the post-apocalyptic genre, you’ll definitely be interested to hear that the Fallout video game series might be coming to either the big screen or the small screen at some point in the near future. Joystiq reports that developer Bethesda Softworks have recently trademarked the Fallout name for both “entertainment services in the nature of an on-going television program” and also “motion picture films about a post-nuclear apocalyptic world”. While it may only be a standard procedure in planning for the future of the franchise, with no production deals announced thus far, it certainly sounds like promising news.
Their most recent installment, Fallout 3, won a number of awards for game of the year in 2008, and would probably lend itself well to either a movie or TV adaptation. The story takes place in a world where World War II led to nuclear destruction. 200 years later, a child who was born from survivors living in a government-sponsored underground shelter, ventures out into the world in search of his missing father. I would certainly add this to the list of video games that could actually be turned into a decent movie, assuming the right people were involved. What do you think, gamers? Would you like to see a Fallout movie or TV show?

A big part of the game was choosing whether to be good, evil, or neutral. It will be interesting to see how they handle that, if at all. I think they should make it a TV series with a “choose your own adventure” type feel. Each week people could vote on what major decision the main character will make. They would have to shoot all the possible outcomes, which would make it pretty hard to do. They could release the unaired options on DVD and make more money.
Posted by Dugen on April 21st, 2009You know, this could actually be a really good movie. Who doesn’t like the post-apocalyptic genre?
Throw in a little human nature vs. nurture sub-text (light side vs. dark side), a cool looking, unique (lightsaber-esq) handgun for killing bad guys, a loyal dog (Chewbacca) and you got the next Star Wars on your hands….
Or they could just re-make A Boy and his Dog. One of my all time favorites.
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on April 21st, 2009Didn’t like Fallout 3 all that much, but Fallout 2 were awesome back in the day. A tv-series would be neat, but a movie, I don’t know. We already have the new Terminator-franchise for that stuff. (I know there is Sarah Connor Chronicles too, but that isn’t all that good.)
Posted by Kasper F. Nielsen on April 21st, 2009A post-apocalyptic setting with mutants and rustic technology is a more novel experience in an RPG. We’ve seen it many times in film…I’ll save any interest (or lack thereof) until after a director is attached.
Lets all just sit back, relax, and watch the wonderfully cheesy 2019: After the Fall of New York; because the shitty video game movie curse may never be broken.
