Monday Morning Box Office Report: Efron Again

Zac Efron proved that he still has plenty of box office power outside of the High School Musical franchise, and also that the body switch comedy is alive and well after 17 Again led the weekend charts with $24 million. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the weekend, however, was that the political drama State of Play won out over the visceral action movie Crank: High Voltage, opening at #2 versus a disappointing #6. Monsters vs Aliens, meanwhile, has quietly become the top grossing movie of 2009, maintaining the #3 position and surpassing Paul Blart: Mall Cop on its way to a $162 million total thus far. Hannah Montana: The Movie dropped to #4, while Fast & Furious rounded out the top 5. Any speculation as to why Crank: High Voltage did so poorly?
1. 17 Again — $24.1M
2. State of Play — $14.1M
3. Monsters vs Aliens — $12.9M
4. Hannah Montana: The Movie — $12.7M
5. Fast & Furious — $12.3M
6. Crank: High Voltage — $6.51M
7. Observe and Report — $4.05M
8. Knowing — $3.48M
9. I Love You, Man — $3.37M
10. The Haunting in Connecticut — $3.15M

What a shame, I thought Crank would have done much better. I guess Statham doesn’t have that much of an American appeal as I thought.

Posted by hoffamania on April 20th, 2009Crank: High Voltage didn’t do good because the Jason Statham adrenaline inducing films are just getting overdone: Crank, Transporter 3, Death Race, The Bank Job, Crank: High Voltage all within the past two years. I can definitely see why it didn’t do well at the box office.
