First Official Photo of Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood

Well if you thought that Russell Crowe was starting to let himself go after his podgy and unkempt appearances in both Body of Lies and State of Play, you’ll be happy to see him back to his hunky self here in the first official still from Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood. I haven’t posted much about the upcoming Robin Hood film thus far because there hasn’t really been much to say about it, but I am definitely looking forward to it, and this photo is a good start.
The article over at USA Today focuses on the fact that they are hoping to recreate the feel and success of Gladiator, which may inspire mixed feelings from some people who feel Gladiator has slowly come be seen as overrated in the years since its Oscar victories. Personally, I’ll see just about anything Ridley Scott directs, and even though the story of Robin Hood has been told many times before (most recently in a BBC series), I’m down for a slightly more gritty adaptation as well. What do you think, can Russell Crowe outdo Kevin Costner? Check out a bigger version of the photo here and feel free to dissect his “medieval” look.

“What do you think, can Russell Crowe outdo Kevin Costner?” Please tell me that is sarcasm? Because that Robin Hood was such a joke…Costner’s performance was so…American! I never knew Robin Hood came from the beaches of California!
Posted by 1138 on April 20th, 2009I like Crowe. I liked Scott. I like Gladiator. This is gonna rule!
Posted by Kasper F. Nielsen on April 20th, 2009kevin costner can’t hang with the crowe. this movie is gonna rock sweet!
Posted by Rick on April 20th, 2009Gladiator is overrated.
The Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie is AWESOME.
Crowe has the potential to be better but he just doesn’t strike me as a “nimble man of the forest.” I want to see a Robin Hood sprinting through the forest, scaling a tree and taking out a man on horsebook with a bow and arrow while hanging upside-down off the limb of a tree by his legs… all without breaking a sweat… and I don’t think Crowe can pull that off. He looks like a common thug, not a spry, wily, charming thief.
They should have cast me.
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on April 20th, 2009Crowe can play period real well, just look at “Master and Commander”. Even he’s not English, he can certainly do an English accent better than the Cost can. Crowe seems to love working with Scott, so there’s no doubt the chemistry itself will produce something good, we’ll see how accurate and realistic the historical re-enactment is, but if it’s more like “Master and Commander” as opposed to “Gladiator” I think it will do well. Besides, Robin Hood’s historical legitimacy is dubious at best, so there’s no reason why different interpretations of him as different kinds of characters couldn’t work.
Posted by Maopheus on April 20th, 2009did they have hair paste back then? that’s a pretty styled coif
maybe they’ll have a scene were Russell grads some bull semen to get his hair just right.
Master and Commander is the bomb, near perfect film in my book
Posted by rus in chicago on April 20th, 2009That Bow looks a little wonky… I’m not historian but is that what an English Longbow looked like? What about the fetching (did I make that word up?) on the arrows they look almost plastic they are so perfect…
::Grumble::
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on April 20th, 2009Shut Up Ed, they made the exact Robin Hood you want to see already, its actually good if you give it a chance:

That is indeed the best version of Robin Hood that there’s been.
Posted by Deven Science on April 21st, 2009Yeah but the BBC series was rubbish.
So this may be the first GOOD Robin Hood story in a long time.
Posted by TheAllKnowingGod on April 21st, 2009That is a genuine English Longbow. (Not the ‘recurve’ bow which people are used to seeing in these movies but which is actually much later design…so the longbow seen in this shot may look ‘wonky’ because people are not used to seeing the genuine article. Crowe, with his usual attention to detail, has been practicing using it for months.
Posted by Janey Maguire on April 26th, 2009Now this looks awesome, Is it filmed in England if so does he need a double :p.

Posted by Paul Jackson on April 26th, 2009Everyone, I may be wrong but I thought Crowe was playing the Sherrif of Nottingham not Robin Hood, if so he’s perfectly cast. I could be wrong though?
Posted by Matt Daniels on June 24th, 2009Can Ridley answer this???? Is Olivia DeHavilon or was she asked to appear in the movie?????
