Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience Trailer Starring Sasha Grey

There’s a movement afoot that’s been bringing a lot of adult film stars into mainstream movies, and Steven Soderbergh is the latest director to jump on this trend by casting Sasha Grey in the lead role of his latest film The Girlfriend Experience. In this case, it seems like a perfect fit since the film is about a high-end Manhattan call girl and the various relationships she must navigate in her life. Soderbergh, whose best known movies include Erin Brockovich, Traffic and the Ocean’s Trilogy, did this film as another one of his experimental in-between indie projects like Bubble and Full Frontal.
The movie stars basically all non-actors and unknowns, and is shot very much in a documentary style. It seems like an interesting premise, although something tells me the main draw will be Sasha Grey. The first trailer has debuted online over at Hulu, which unfortunately prevents anyone outside the U.S. from watching it. I have embedded a YouTube version below instead. Magnolia Pictures will release The Girlfriend Experience in select theatres on May 22nd.

Seems promising and worth the watch!
Posted by Sebina on April 16th, 2009Thank you Steven! This is a great topic to get a real serious film. The Girlfriend Experience, i.e., the increase in prostitution has boomed in Chicago and probably everywhere. Social networking sites like Roomservice2000, The Exotic Review and craigslist are making it so easy for men to become what the industry calls “hobbyist” and have created a subculture and business vastly different than the old “hooker on the corner”. I hope Steven includes the married male perspective of dealing with changes/stress in the traditional gender and family roles, sexual needs in a hyper sexual society, etc.
Posted by rus in chicago on April 16th, 2009i just hope we see plenty of sasha gray. but i agree with rus. this movie looks like it will be very entertaining and well done.
Posted by rick on April 16th, 2009She is a baaaaaaaaaaaaaad baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad girl. My goodness…
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on April 16th, 2009Maybe he’ll do the sequel about the former NY govenor. The hooker kind of looks like the one from that scandal but that might not be intentional.
Posted by Ian on April 16th, 2009corgan, navarro, and now soderbergh, impressive. i dont think anything will beat her role in “Teenage Anal Princess 5″ or “White Chicks Gettin’ Black Balled 22 ” but i cant what to see her next movie by the guy who made Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter
Posted by kris on April 16th, 2009i’ll watch anything by soderbergh, and i think this looks really good.
Posted by Mitch on April 16th, 2009Yep – I’ve seen Sasha Grey in her…erm…other movies. While it’s a…erm….pleasure to see her in those…erm…other movies….I always thought she should (also) do “serious” movies. She’s got the charisma for the big screen. And Soderbergh (so far) never fails.
Posted by Sly on April 17th, 2009man, I watched some clips of her “day job” and she is without a doubt the dirtiest person I’ve ever seen! her third job could be with Roto-Rooter, in case they are not in Canada:

Posted by rus in chicago on April 17th, 2009Hah! Just wait until she gets interviewed and is introduced as ‘adult film star Sasha Grey’. Man, she’ll flip! Expected quote: “Canadians are like buttsex without the K-Y Jelly!”
Posted by Bas on April 18th, 2009love it. just saw it on VOD. Soderbergh is a pretty fantastic Director. Very interesting casting choice to say the least! Over all really good.
Posted by matt on May 12th, 2009The movie missed the mark. Sasha Grey can’t act – her character becomes downright annoying not too far into the film. As well, the film flirts with discussing the ethos of prostitution and the complexities of relationship between a prostitute and her client, particularly with regulars, but ultimately says very little about anything. There was also almost no nudity and no sex. Apparently there were three sex scenes originally but Soderbergh cut them. I wonder if he would have done so if it was Jessica Biel, lol? Finally, prostitutes are very different from porn actors. The latter are exhibitionists, and if you look at any of Sasha’s incredibly hard core movies, you can see that she gets off on playing the role (not the sex) but it’s also plain to see that she’s sending the whole thing up at the same time. Prostitutes deliver a fantasy one on one, no cameras, in a much more intimate setting (no crew and others standing around watching). The bottom line is that The GFE is more than a bad movie, it’s a missed opportunity.
