Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker Trailer

hurtlockertrailer

We’ve been hearing a lot about Kathryn Bigelow’s latest film The Hurt Locker ever since last year’s Toronto Film Festival, where it received rave reviews and was eventually acquired by Summit Entertainment. Now it looks like they’re finally ready to roll it out to theatres, and they’re not afraid of going up against some of this summer’s heavy hitters. Bigelow is known for directing Point Break, which many count as one of the greatest action movies of all-time (just ask Edgar Wright). With The Hurt Locker, she brings energy and suspense to a subject that has been surprisingly lacking in that area up until now: the war in Iraq.

Yes, after flops like Stop-Loss, In The Valley of Elah and The Lucky Ones, a lot of people are saying that this might be the first Iraq War movie to be commercially successful. (Granted, it was shot as an independent film for $11 million, so I think it will turn a nice profit either way.) The movie focuses on three members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad, who put their lives on the line to disarm deadly bombs every day. The cast includes Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie (both nominated for Independent Spirit Awards), plus Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse and Evangeline Lilly. Check out the trailer below and see what you think. The Hurt Locker hits select theatres on June 26th before expanding throughout July.

  1. looks good – I’m in

  2. I always loved Kathryn Bigelow’s style of action and thought she was going to be the next big action director! Point Break was a bad movie with some great action scenes. The dialogue was dumb and Keanau Reeves was so bad though I did love Patrick S’s character portrayal. PS is a under appreciated actor in my mind.

As for KB she never did become the next big thing but I always look out for her work! The trailer for this movie looks damn good though and I will see it in the theater!

See, what I don’t get is that people haven’t wanted to see Iraq films featuring A and B List actors; what makes people think anyone is going to see an Iraq film featuring actors most people have never heard of? I mean it’s a total shame if people don’t see this movie because it’s freaking awesome (totally in my Top Ten from last year) but I have my doubts about its mass (or moderate) appeal. I’d love to be proven wrong, of course. :)

  4. Nice, a new “Best in the business” type film. I love those.

  5. She also did K19: The Widowmaker, and this movie is as horrible as that one. It’s fucking boring.

  6. I saw it at SXSW and all I can say is it was spectacular! Jeremy Renner should be nominated for some kind of award for his performance. Kathryn Bigelow deserves a nod or two also. She did good with this film.
