Zac Efron Signs on for Live Action Jonny Quest Movie

Last week we reported on a rumour that High School Musical star and teen heartthrob Zac Efron had shown interest in starring in a Full Metal Panic movie, and while that still has yet to be confirmed, it appears that another rumoured Zac Efron role has indeed come to pass. The L.A. Times is reporting that Efron has signed on to star in a live action adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera animated series Jonny Quest. The script for the movie was written by Dan Mazeau (The Flash) and apparently stays true to the old school action-adventure vibe of the show while also modernizing it a bit.
The weird thing is, there are also reports that Warner Brothers are thinking of retitling the film so as not to associate it with the original cartoon and the flop that was Speed Racer — which makes almost no sense to me. It’s true that we haven’t seen very many successful animation to live action translations so far, but if any of them can work, Jonny Quest has one of the best chances of succeeding. Either way I think this movie could serve as a decent Indiana Jones-esque family adventure flick, and I’m excited about the prospects even with Zac Efron in the lead. Aside from Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles (which I still haven’t seen), Efron hasn’t really been given a chance to show his true acting potential as of yet. What do you think, can a Jonny Quest movie succeed? Will Zac Efron prove himself to be more than just a pretty face who can sing and dance?

Who is he going to play….Johnny? What’s he going to do, dye his hair blonde? This is already sounding like a disaster in the making.

Posted by rick on April 13th, 2009It’s a disaster because he’s going to dye his hair blonde? I think actors have done more extreme things to match the look of a character before.
The one thing that people might complain about is the fact that he’s too old for the role (the character is supposed to be like 11).
Posted by Sean on April 13th, 2009you could so get the boy from slum dog millionaire to play haji lol!
Posted by rick on April 13th, 2009Sean, I did forget mention about the AGE thing. But if they’re going to modernize it, it probably won’t resemble or be true to the original anyway. As for the hair thing, c’mon….what ever happened to effective casting? I still haven’t gotten over Fred and Daphne in live action Scooby Doo movie.
I wonder if Hadji (sp?) is still going be East Indian. Or will they make him some smart assed black kid in gang attire?
Posted by Tomas on April 13th, 2009Wait and see seems to be the winning phrase!
I like to stay positive and hope I will be pleasantly surprised!
I am totally with you Tomas about Fred and Daphne. Freddie P. Jr. was a very weird blonde.

STOP
MODERNIZING
CLASSICS!!!
What the proverbial fuck is wrong with Hollywood??? Why do they have to take awesome things and lameify them? What asshat looks at the world of Johnny Quest and says, “Wow this world is fantastic! Now, lets see how it would work if instead of using this fantastic world, we use our own lame world!”
ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHRHARARARRGGHH!!!!! AHHHH!!!!
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on April 13th, 2009Hmmmm … with this I suppose we are one step closer to a Venture Bros. live action movie. I can see it now giant super science set pieces and overwrought action that is filled with edge of your seat excitement and hilarity.
Posted by Ian on April 13th, 2009Jonny Quest – 11-12 years old, blond
Zack Efron – 22-23 by the time the film comes out, swarthy
So this is going to be a story about Jonny’s college adventures right? Is is Art History professor really an evil robot? Is the beer bong really haunted?
