Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi’s Paper Heart to Get Limited Release in August

I’m a little surprised that one of the movies with the biggest buzz going in to this year’s Sundance Film Festival actually ended up getting sort of lost in the shuffle. Paper Heart was originally hyped as a “top secret” Michael Cera project, but later revealed to be the brainchild of his girlfriend Charlyne Yi. Mixing both documentary interviews and a fictional narrative, the movie finds Yi on a quest to explore the concept of love across America and determine whether or not such a thing really exists. Jay and I really liked the movie a lot, but it seems we were one of the few sites that gave it a rave review. Go figure.

Anyway, I’m excited to tell you that the movie will finally be coming to theatres this August courtesy of Overture Films. According to indieWire, the movie will open in New York and L.A. on August 7th, and expand further the week after. Anchor Bay Entertainment will handle the eventual DVD release. I’ll be very interested to see how well this movie is received, particularly outside of a festival atmosphere. While some movies tend to play better at a festival, in this case I feel like some critics may have been a little too cynical towards it. At any rate, I think Overture was smart to put it out in August, giving it a two month buffer from Michael Cera’s other summer flick, Year One. Although the movie doesn’t have an official website as of yet, be sure to follow the official Twitter feed for future updates!
