Warren Ellis’s G.I. Joe: Resolute Animated Movie Coming to Adult Swim

If you’re one of the many G.I. Joe fans who isn’t expecting much from the upcoming Stephen Sommers live action movie, you might be interested to hear that there is another G.I. Joe movie of sorts coming out later this month. Hasbro has been working on a new animated web series called G.I. Joe: Resolute (which, as you can probably guess, also has a related toy line), and although it has yet to be released online, it looks like Adult Swim plans to air the entire thing as an hour-long movie on Friday April 24th at midnight.

G.I. Joe: Resolute was written by Warren Ellis, who was supposedly hired because he knew nothing at all about G.I. Joe (he is British, after all), and directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Justice League Unlimited). Some early footage was shown at the San Diego Comic Con (see crappy video, embedded below), where it apparently got a lot of people excited. I suppose it looks kinda promising, but I’m not getting my hopes up. These animated movies that claim to be for older audiences always end up being completely forgettable. I just hope it’s better than that terrible Valor vs. Venom CG movie that came out a few years ago.

  1. I didn’t know this was Warren Ellis I might just check it out. Kind of looks like character designs similar to the Ghost in the Shell TV series.

Did you see the trailer? Cuz that aint anything like Valor vs. Venom which was marketed directly for kids. This film has the Joes and Cobra using bullets, not fun lasers and they promised that some characters will be killed off.

Also, other movies that they say are for older audiences have been pretty damned good. Wonderwoman, the New Frontier, and even the Ultimate Avengers movies have been pretty damned good.

  3. I’ve been looking forward to catching a glimpse of this! The animation looks almost japanese quality from what I can tell. I’ll set the DVR.

Sean, those animated movies aren’t always terrible. I saw Superman: Doomsday. It was nothing to write home to Momma about; but it was certainly more entertaining then Superman Returns.

  4. this looks good ill watch it i collected the recent comics a few years back it was prety serious stuff for comics i think if i rembered quick kick and a few others really did die this looked kind of on par to the comic looks prety good might be better than the live action movie out.

  5. I saw it and it was excellent. Because of the nature and subjects, it was shown at 2:00 A.M. on Adult Swim in Philly. I’m a hard critic when it comes to Marvel and DC comic characters and this movie kept my attention the entire time. The best part was the part that dealt with SnakeEyes unfinished business. Where can we purchase this movie?
    Sincerely,
    Michele Carter
