Monday Morning Box Office Report: Vin Diesel Pulls a Fast One

I think it’s safe to say that Vin Diesel is back. His return to the franchise that made him a star led to an astonishing $72.5 million opening weekend, the biggest April opening ever and, indeed, the biggest opening ever for an action movie. Can you believe it? I guess Paul Walker and Michelle Rodriguez might have had something to do with it as well. Monsters vs Aliens also accumulated another $33 million, helping buoy the entire weekend to an estimated $185 million. Greg Mottola’s Adventureland was unfortunately left in the dust, earning just $6 million in its first weekend, proving once again that reviews mean nothing and advertising is everything.
1. Fast & Furious — $72.5M
2. Monsters vs Aliens — $33.5M
3. The Haunting in Connecticut — $9.55M
4. Knowing — $8.13M
5. I Love You, Man — $7.85M
6. Adventureland — $6.01M
7. Duplicity — $4.3M
8. Race to Witch Mountain — $3.35M
9. 12 Rounds — $2.3M
10. Sunshine Cleaning — $1.88M

so the American public wants Commercials not quality? That is the smartest and most correct thing I’ve ever heard anyone say in the history of the human race.
Posted by Bob The Slob on April 6th, 2009Sad. I spent my money on BOTH Adventureland and F&F. It’s no contest which is the better film. Hopefully after word of mouth gets around about how great Adventureland is, it will pick up some steam.
It’s not fair that these numbers will bury Mottola and there will likely be another shitty F&F movie.
I hate people.
Posted by Andrew James on April 6th, 2009its because Fast and the Furious is now a fantasy film – no one in the audience can afford to buy the cars they are watching on screen.
Posted by rus in chicago on April 6th, 2009I still remember seeing the First F&F and was left wondering what the fuss was all about? The acting was horrible, the storyline idiotic, and did I mention the acting was horrible? Even the action wasn’t that cool.
I guess people wanted the original cast back…and there are fans of this franchise…but damn 73 million?????? Ya gotta be kidding me!
Posted by 1138 on April 6th, 2009It’s the cars, it’s all about the cars. The rest is filler.
Posted by swarez on April 6th, 2009Crazy. I guess April is the time to open big since the competition is probably pretty weak. That said looks like that Dreamworks CGI still made beau coup bucks. I guess people are going to the theatres still. Kind of puts a dent in the argument that the net is ruining the industry.
