Dragonball: Evolution Sequel Ready To Go?

With the release of the highly anticipated Dragonball adaptation less than a week away, rumour has it that a script has already been written for the inevitable sequel. Justin Chatwin, who from the advance footage completely embodies the character of Goku, says “I know they’ve written a second one and it’s pretty far out there. The second one really goes to some different places that I’ve never seen in any comic book adaptation.” Adding to the speculation, avowed Dragonball fan James Marsters has hopes that the series will eventually reach the majesty known as Dragonball Z, where his portrayal of Piccolo will hew closer to what most people would recognize.
I’m having a hard time gauging how Dragonball: Evolution will do at the box office. Normally I wouldn’t care, but considering there probably won’t be any more Dead Or Alive or Street Fighter movies for awhile, I’m hoping this does well enough to justify a sequel or three. While it seems like a safe bet to prematurely label this one a bomb, I wonder if the combination of a holiday weekend and hordes of Dragonball fans feeling compelled to visit the theatre won’t result in just enough juice to give a sequel the green light. Whether or not you’ve already written off Dragonball: Evolution, would you like to see the franchise continue, or should they stop here and reboot in a few years?

“Justin Chatwin, who from the advance footage completely embodies the character of Goku, ”
WHAT???
In both the Dragonball anime and manga Goku is a fun, naive happy-go-lucky kid. In this movie he is a moody, highschool emo.
And we probably don’t get to see his wang or him patting girl’s crotches, which is hugely important to the character in the anime.
Posted by TheAllKnowingGod on April 6th, 2009How do you spell Dragonball: Evolution? B.O.M.B!
Posted by swarez on April 6th, 2009“Highly anticipated”
Hahaha, APRIL FOOLS! Oh wait… what?
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on April 6th, 2009This movie looks like a damn joke they just ruined my favorite anime of all time thanks assholes
Posted by Jedimind on April 6th, 2009Dragonball is the greatest anime of all time, if not the greatest Cartoon of all time.
Think of this is a new Dragonball, an evolution of the series. Taking into consideration the money and effort needed to make any cartoon look the same when made into a live-action film…it should be a fun new look on the series.
I for one am very excited and even more so for the sequels.
Give these guys a break, they did everything they could to stick to the original series and if you have ever been a dragonball fan, take it for what it is and give it a chance!
Posted by Matt on April 6th, 2009I’m thinking it’s possible that this could fail financially.
Older fans see that this will indeed be PHAIL.
Young kids aren’t really big on the Dragonball like they were a decade ago.
I think Dragonball is a good example of anime that only the most brilliant of filmmakers could adapt properly.
Posted by Ryan M. on April 6th, 2009A reboot in a few years of course lol. It’s not rocket science.
Posted by X on April 6th, 2009wtf dragonball franchise i guess these days you’ll just give your name to any hack…. the director sucked , the producer sucked , the writers sucked , the casting director really sucked . the only reason anyone will watch this is dragonball was a great manga but youve ruined it , shame on you people for giving this a review of anything less than awefull . oh and btw where the hell was Oolong , pwuar, and yamcha’s wolf fang fist???
Posted by jamez k. on April 7th, 2009i jus watched this movie.
Posted by adam lewis on April 7th, 2009its called dragonball but funny enough it had nothing to do wit the cartoon.
im wondering if its the same thing? can someone tell me why such a poor excuse for a real life dragonball movie was even shown in cinema. my years of devotion to the cartoon have led me to be so disappointed with the film.
there was so much more they could have done wit it if they left out all the crap. whats most upsetting is that the story was not only wrong but it was crammed into a 15 minute part of the movie. ill never give them a second chance wit that movie put someone good incharge of making the next one!!!!
I just saw the movie… I absolutley loved it!
I watched the anime when it first aired on TV. When the series ended i was extremely upset. But when i heard they were making a live movie, i said it might be intereseting. Although the movie is “modernized” i still think that it was brilliant! And everyone, think of it this way. If this movie was never made then dragon ball (z, GT) would be forgotten by many people! If you didnt like the movie, be happy that people are still trying to keep the DBZ ALIVE!!!!
Posted by Wesley on April 11th, 2009@ commenter number 6; financially this movie is doing realy well. It’s made almost it’s whole budget and it hasn’t been released for long (in the UK and US) and it still has yet to be released in Germany.
Posted by Gosha on April 12th, 2009and commenter number 10 i’m totally with you
as a long time fan of the anime i thought the movie would absolutly suck
but i seen it tonight and i hated it
but it loved it
it was hard to take it into my mind that it had been modernised however if there is to be a sequel
which is more than likely judging by the ending of the movie
then i belive a fresh start from the saiyan saga would be good
i mean it was only a movie, people need to chill out and not take it to heart that it wasnt as much like the anime as it should have been but i cant have expected them to have shown goku and piccolo flying around in the punching and kicking at speeds that can only be drawn by artists
all in all i think the movie was awesome if u can let them away with what couldnt be done in real life and only done by sketches
Posted by deluminate on April 12th, 2009this movie may not be 100% but comment #8 are you serious jamez? how would a talking pig and flying blue cat look in live action? they did the best they could and modernized it. and i liked watching the interaction with goku and grandpa gohan becuz we have never seen any of that. this movie deserves a perfect ten and no one else should say otherwise!
Posted by Jared on April 12th, 2009I saw the movie. As a fan of Dragonball I was a little upset with the movie.
Posted by KM on April 12th, 2009HOWEVER!
What you have to remember is that the movie has to tell a story that everyone can understand (even those who have never heard of the Dragonball anime)
I believe that in that instance, it was a success.
In the matter of having to tell a story to people who may have no idea about Dragonball at all, I believe that it was amazing.
And think of it. I have heard that they are signed for 7 more movies. They could easily make an amazing story since they have most of the story out of the way (other then Goku being an alien).
I believe that there will be better movies (more true to the anime and manga) in the future.
ok, so i just got done watchiong this movie and i was not impressed. However, what most people need to understand is that this movie should have been made probably 20 years in the future in order to make it look as good as the animated series. Lets face it if the movie company would have made the movie exactly like the cartoon the cost of this production would have been astronomical. Also there should def. be a cast/producer/director change. Hopefully in the sequel the storyline will be exactly the same to the animated series.
Posted by bill on April 13th, 2009the movie was actually pretty good. it is what it is, a re-imagining of the dragonball story. it did follow the anime/manga to an extent, but to make the movie exactly like the animated series would be redundant because the series is already out on dvd. just watch the discs in chronological order and you’ll have your dragonball movie. and to those complaining about goku being white, get over it.

i see what you mean by it being made more futureistic in my opinion it kind of showed the begining of the future as cap corp wasnt very big in the movie even yamcha was impresed with bulmas bike , it could mean that they are just getting into it , as a matter of fact for where they will be starting on a next movie it will be set so many years after dragonball if they are sticking to the anime and go to the saiyan saga , but i suppose they always could make one of the animated movies
Posted by deluminate on April 13th, 2009I think we need a reboot in the next couple of years with a better company.
Posted by John on April 13th, 2009Okay i saw the movie…WONDERFUL! It was so good i saw it twice! I wa with dragonball (Z,GT) since the beggining. the movie told the story of goku and explained what the dragonballs were used for. This movie did not have such a big budget, but with a small amount of money they succeeded. The reason they started at “dragonball” was because they wanted to make more sequels to maybe if they are lucky reach the Majjin Buu saga (Z) or even the Baby Saga of GT. They should definitley start filming immediatley!!! More people liked it than hated it. Please!!! START FILMING SOON!!
Posted by Wesley on April 13th, 2009There’s not gonna be a reboot because this movie hasn’t failed! The Hulk did terrible in every way, I didn’ know anyone really who liked it. DBE is doing good and making the money it needs to and a lot of people genuinley like it.
Posted by Gosha on April 13th, 2009Commenter 14; you are so right. Nuff said
However I really liked this movie XD
Hey guys, i know the movie isnt like we expected after watching the dragonball series and reading the manga. But come on, considering they had to take that idea and make it into a modern teenage movie is pretty difficult, i mean it would be hard to create someone to act as light-hearted and silly as Goku, but man at least there trying i watched this movie and i give it an A+, i think all DBZ fans need to watch and support this and hope that they make the full series and hopefully it gets even better!!
Posted by itsover9000 on April 13th, 2009fox fanboys pls dont spam this site. we all alredy know the movie PHAIL so dont waste ur time.
Posted by itstheend on April 13th, 2009deluminate – couldnt be done ? Take a look on last Matrix and say it again … Its only about money. If they put more $ in DB it could be a wonder in cinematography and i bet people would love it all over the world ,with way better story line of course. It would be great to see remake . Otherwise if they go to sequel first film will be remembered as bad.
Posted by colt on April 13th, 2009As a mnvie 8.5 as a dragonball movie 2.0 they need to make the next one better.
Posted by Hugh hackman 4 vegeta on April 14th, 2009I thik they destroy the best anime action show of all times.
Posted by saulo collado on April 15th, 2009The only way to fixed is to actually make a good movie.
But if they are just goig to make another crapy movie then they better not do anithing a all.
even though they did things totally different then the anime i really enjoyed the movie cant wait till vegeta comes in the picture and realy excited to see how they do super sayian goood job for a good begging.
Posted by eddyludwig on April 18th, 2009my girlfriend and i loved the movie. I really hope they make a sequel soon
Posted by andy on April 20th, 2009c’mon on guys there still early in the series, they were really accurate with telling the story as goku as a child, wait tell they get more into the series then we can determine if they did it right or not…. what im trying to say is that they are still to early in the series to determine if they did go or not…. wait till like the z series of the movie comes out then it will be obvious to tell if they did it good or not so for now just give them a chance and chill out about it…. ya know what i mean???
Posted by meadedog on April 22nd, 2009The funny thing is that all you guys who hate it is that if they make a sequel you will all still watch it.
Posted by Ryanj on April 24th, 2009number 29 – your so right. they moaned about this movie from the start and still watched it, now they are moaning about a sequel but they will watch that too
Posted by Gosha on May 1st, 2009I absolutely love the Dragonball Anime series and i was super surprised when i heared they were going to make this movie. The movie wasnt that good, but still worth watching it(lol). Even if it was a complete disaster, there would still come a sequel, JUST because its such an extremely popular story.
I hope they will put more effort in a next
Dragonball(Z) movie.
The kamehameha wave was amazing though.
Posted by Son Goku on May 4th, 2009i think the movie was terrible since the story does not follows the real story of dragon ball z yes picolo and goku figth but when they first met goku was still a kid not a teenager, also the producers suck doing this kind of movie i think micheal bay in combination with steven spielberg would had made it better since they are expert on doing movies with alot special effects. Then again these people apparently have not seen any episodes of dragon ball z reason why this was a failure. I have to see if they make a sequel of this movie they better do a better job looking for the right research so the could suceed and gain more money out of it than they this in this one.
Posted by el cangry on May 4th, 2009Power Rangers was more believable than this movie. …I did get something out of it but unless you’re as interested in how people “comes of age” emotionally in their early 20s as I am I don’t think you will.
They really need to think about this. I mean really now, they can’t do to the Frieza saga what they did to this movie. Frieza was DEEP. You can’t just play around in shallow waters… you gotta go into the deep end and maybe, just maybe put your head under….
Posted by tcaudilllg on May 6th, 2009This movie was gay even i could have made a homemade video off dbz at my house and it would have looked better 2
Posted by sharkhound on May 11th, 2009obviously the movie didnt follow exactly what dragonball or dragonball z is. but thats not really the point. there just trying to keep them alive. im am a dragonball Z maniac, its the only interest ive got so thats saying something. when i saw the movie i was thinking the worst but i wasnt really disapointed. i thought it was really good. if i could say one bad thing about it was piccolo was a little weird but that was the first try they’ll get it next time. i cant wait till they continue on with dbz, they couldnt make that bad if they tried them maybe at the end they’ll introduce frieza. so give the movie makers a break. the movie wasnt that bad and the sequels will be even better.
Posted by jason marion on May 15th, 2009Hahaha! Look at all the paid FOX publicists that posted comments in one big block!
“this movie was great….I loved it….it needs 7 sequels!”
Get the FUCK out of there. How stupid does Hollywood really think consumers are? You REALLY think DB made enough money for a sequel?
How does 3.4 MILLION ON THE OPENING WEEKEND SOUND for a movie that had a 100 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET.
Get your heads out of your asses. This shit is in the can, and rightfully so.
Now if they do this to Neon Genesis Evangelion…I imagine another terrorist attack will be in the works.
Posted by Camborg 80-Trey on May 17th, 2009ok calling this movie a success us just mentally retarded.. we have to ways to look at it neither of them end well:
one we choose to com[are this movie to the series it was based to and instantly its ruined, Gokus character was destroyed his happy go lucky persona destroyed not to mentioned instead of a love for fighting he is more interested in sex which is exactly the opposite of the series and destroyed one of the things that made goku so cool not to mention they turned him into a city kid with “street smarts”… the concept of the tail full moon all gone replaced with a random tiny eclipse monkey not to mention the flaws in the base story line and piccolo himself…
Did they think the original story line of how the dragons balls came into existence sucked?? or maybe they where just trying to put a fresh take on the story problem with that by changing the one little key fact on how the balls where created you changed the entire storyline and rewrote the character piccolo as a result. and theirs hundreds of ways its gone away from the story for Hollywood glamor but i can’t be fucked going into it.
OK so we have established we can’t enjoy this movie if we compare it to the series then surely we can enjoy it as a movie on its own to not even be compared to the series………. fraid not even as a stand alone this is a a movie that can only be compared to tom cruises legend in how painful it was to watch…
The fight scenes where sub par at best and spread way to far apart taking it away from the fact its meant to be a martial arts movie.. the characters where just shoved in there with no build up probably relying on fan boys minds to fill the gap and the movie went way to fast to fit in the large plot they tried to build not to mention the shoddy dialogue and miserable costume design for a movie with a $100millon budget the least they could do was give us costumes that looked like they came from a movie made in 2009 not 1980… they where just fake looking and gave the already cheesy feeling movie a feeling of disgust and pity….
the only way this movie was gunna be a success was if it kept the fan boys happy but they ignored this fact so basically you’ve destroyed my childhood show thanks a lot fucktards…. and if you ruin vegeta for me in a sequel then im gunna cry lol
Posted by drax on June 2nd, 2009alright i honestly don’t care what they do to goku, or chichi or hell even bulma but if they Fuck up Vegeta….i’m getting the rusty knife out myself and getting on a plane.
Posted by E on June 12th, 2009I thought Dragonball: Evolution was fine; not the best super-hero movie, but still really good. I am an artist who can draw great portraits of people and I have to say that even though it may be hard for many people to believe that an actor could look like Goku, I say Justin Chatwin does look exactly like Goku as an adult later in Dragonball Z and GT. The special effects looked great including the air-bending techniques. The martial arts were good, but there could have been more of that especially at super-speed in the air. I loved the romance between Goku and Chi-Chi as well as Bulma and Yamcha. I could see simple elements from Dragonball and Dragonball Z. The story was great, but the Oozaru could have been larger and more menacing. Last, Goku is my number 1 favorite super-hero, but Krillin, Tien, Yajarobi, and other side characters should have been in the movie. I enjoyed seeing James Marsters playing Piccolo perfectly. And the actresses complimented their characters. The actress who played Mai should have talked some in the movie. I give Dragonball: Evolution a B; 8 out of 10.
Posted by Mista Cool on July 20th, 2009seriously, the movie wasnt great but they need 2 add vegeta nd speed it up then big hit
Posted by juan puentes on July 30th, 2009i am sry none of the characters look like the anime, the story line is random. goku needs a tail to transform into the giant ape and it is on a full moon not an eclipse. what is with the air bending, the non bald master roshi, goku calling gohan grandpa, goku beat piccolo when he was like 10-12. shen long is a little short compared to his never ending body, and not talking, where is kami, tien, the ox king, a giant ape not just a normal sized ape. i loved dbz but if this is how they make a moving that needs great special effects should not be made until someone can, if they did broly it would probaly be a midget with no hair.
Posted by rey cruz on July 31st, 2009I just got done watching this film and to be completely honest i think they did a fantastic job… and any true fan who has followed the story line from the begining should know that. Goku was always a confused young child, like the Goku in the film, Grandpa Gohan Was always a cheery old man, like in the film, Bulma is still cocky as hell as is master roshi and yamcha is still that goofy sqeezball ha ha i think this movie really did the cartoon justice four thumbs up fellas
oh and just like in the cartoon goku let piccolo live. bravo gents bravo. oh and chi chi is so hot ha ha
Posted by James on August 1st, 2009I just rented last week and it has honestly been played at least 4 times so far in my house. It was a nice movie that could be enjoyed by all ages, just like the anime. The anime was our verbatim adaptation of the manga. This movie was something else. It was funny and held my attention the whole time, and I’m ready to go out and buy the DVD. Looking forward to the sequel.
Posted by Nema on August 4th, 2009I want to see if they can pull off super sayian like in the origional and how are they goona show the fight between the z warriors and giant monkey vegeta? i havent seen the movie but i heard it sucked plz tell me wat u thought of it at cherry_shelby@yahoo.com.
Posted by shelby on August 5th, 2009As I became a designer in the professional world I learned that the rules of design are suggestions that the novice designer should follow in order to play it safe. My professors would kill me if they heard me say this but, if there is a good concept behind your work and it’s done extremely well; the rules no longer apply.
Posted by Alesandro on October 18th, 2009Ok I am a HUGE fan of db/z and I went into watching this thinking it was gonna be rubbish but I should watch it as a fan. Minus the ozoru backstory I really liked it for what it was. It was kiddy but that was ok. And as it has been said, it’s keeping dbz alive. It’s different but as the story has finished, I would watch a sequel. And honestly I prefered it to GT. Sorry some people are gonna hate me for saying that but it’s my take on it.
