Weekly Poll Results: Best Haunted House Movie

I guess I should have known better than to include The Shining in a poll about haunted house movies… not that it doesn’t qualify as one (technically it is a hotel, but they do live there), but it kind of ensured that no one else had a shot at winning this thing. I honestly thought more people would have voted for some of the old classics, but I’m guessing they just aren’t that well-known. At any rate, Poltergeist was a strong second, followed by The Orphanage, and a two-way tie between The Amityville Horror and The Haunting. Maybe I should have included some less obvious choices like Monster House or Beetlejuice. Are there any other “outside the box” haunted house movies that we missed?
1. The Shining — 44.7%
2. Poltergeist — 20.7%
3. The Orphanage — 7.4%
4. The Amityville Horror — 5.9%
4. The Haunting — 5.9%
6. The Sixth Sense — 4.8%
7. The Changeling — 4.3%
8. The Others — 3.7%
9. The Innocents — 1.6%
10. The Uninvited — 1.1%

That link does work-just type it in address bar in full. Wouldn’t fit in full when copied.

Posted by entertainmenttodayandbeyond on April 1st, 2009The Shining, like Blade Runner, is one of those movies that was universally panned by film critics when it was released, but was adored by young people with a limited frame of reference and limited critical faculties. Mark my words. Twenty years from now, Transformers will be considered a classic.
Posted by Reed Farrington on April 2nd, 2009@ reed – you could be right even “Plan 9″ s a classic now.
@ topic – What about Fulcis “The Beyond” (this house is definatly haunted), “The spiral staircase” or “Hush, Hush sweet Charlotte”? Okay the last two are only seemingly haunted houses, but at least they are scary.
Posted by theDia on April 2nd, 2009How about “The People Under the Stairs”? Or doesn’t that count – the house played a big role, but I’m not sure there was a paranormal thing going on aside from all the craziness…
Posted by Bas on April 2nd, 2009I am glad to see that The Orphanage ranked so high on the list with it being the more recent other than a couple of the other entries. I think that The Orphanage redefined the genre and opened the doors to the likes of The Changeling or any that we will see from here on out.
Posted by Marcus Mallard on April 2nd, 2009Glad to see The Changeling and The Innocents on the list. The Others was pretty good too. But why isn’t Burnt Offerings on here? That is a forgotten gem and better than some of the others on here.
