Minority Report: The Romantic Comedy?

If you happen to be an aspiring screenwriter, it seems like right now is a great time to be selling original scripts to studios. Chris McCoy just sold his second spec script to Dreamworks in less than a month, the first being an untitled college comedy, and the latest being Good Looking, a romantic comedy that takes place in a futuristic world not unlike the one found in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi action flick Minority Report. McCoy imagines that dating services of the future will become so good at reading your habits and finding romantic matches, that no one ever defies the program’s choices… except for the protagonist of the film. Truth be told, this sounds a little more like Gattaca than Minority Report, but I think it could make for a fun premise.
McCoy also has another script being produced called Get Back, about two Beatles fans who try to go back in time and prevent John Lennon from falling in love with Yoko Ono. It made the 2007 Black List of Best Unproduced Screenplays, and has appropriately been described as High Fidelity meets Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Clearly this Chris McCoy guy is someone to watch. Personally I’m looking forward to seeing even more original ideas take flight courtesy of previously unknown screenwriters… I think we can all agree that a little bit of creativity is just what Hollywood needs right now.
