New To Theatres This Weekend: Monsters vs Aliens, 12 Rounds, The Haunting in Connecticut

This week’s biggest release without a doubt is the Dreamworks animated film Monsters vs Aliens, which will probably outgross every other movie by sheer volume alone: the 3-D movie is opening in over 4000 theatres! Also out this weekend (with a slightly smaller target audience) is the WWE action film 12 Rounds and also the demonic horror flick The Haunting in Connecticut. In select theatres, you can check out the documentary American Swing, and the Amy Adams/Emily Blunt comedy Sunshine Cleaning which has expanded to a bunch more screens. What will you be checking out this weekend?

I’m hoping to catch both The Haunting in Connecticut (such a sucker for scary movies – especially ghosts/haunted houses) and Sunshine Cleaning.
I’ll get to Monsters vs Aliens eventually, it will be interesting to see how this year pans out with all the 3D films. So far, people really seem to like how the new technology works, after learning more about it recently it sounds like it will get more and more prominent in film and other mediums.
Posted by Shannon the Movie Moxie on March 27th, 2009Not expecting something amazing from Monsters vs. Aliens, but I’ll probably check that one out this weekend too. So far im 2/2 for 3-d films this year with Coraline and My Bloody Valentine being an enjoyable experience at the theaters.
Anyone know if 12 rounds will have title card shots of each round throughout the movie? Or do they settle whatever Cena and the guy from The Wire in a boxing match at the end of the movie? I will watch it if it contains one of these ideas.
Haunting of Connecticut looks like a total joke. What will FJ be reviewing this weekend?
Posted by Primal on March 27th, 2009We’re planning to review 12 Rounds on the podcast.
Posted by Sean on March 27th, 2009So far I’m 2/2 with 3D as well. Coraline and Monsters vs. Aliens.
As for the Dreamworks film, on its own the film is pretty crummy (story, characters etc.) but not nearly as bad as Shrek(s). The one-trick pony this time isn’t Pop references, but characters falling and/or bumping their heads.
The few Pop references in it are slightly more integrated jokes than the ‘mentionings’ in Shrek – but are still heavyhanded (”that would be a CONVENIENT truth”…hardy har).
In 3D though, Monsters vs. Aliens was great! I can’t wait to see UP!
Haven’t seen a live action film in 3D yet, but I’m thinking the animated might be better in general.
How did Bloody Valentine compare?
