Monday Morning Box Office Report: And Knowing is Half the Battle

There were no big disappointments at the box office this past weekend as all three major new releases topped the charts. However, the big shocker was the fact that Knowing came out on top, the Nicolas Cage thriller soundly defeating the Paul Rudd/Jason Segel comedy I Love You, Man. Did Knowing strike a chord with viewers, or did I Love You, Man just fail to market itself properly? Tony Gilroy’s Duplicity was at #3, followed by Race to Witch Mountain and Watchmen. And yes, Taken is still making money… it has now grossed $133 million and is only $8 mil behind Paul Blart: Mall Cop for the biggest movie of the year thus far.

1. Knowing — $24.8M
2. I Love You, Man — $18M
3. Duplicity — $14.4M
4. Race to Witch Mountain — $13M
5. Watchmen — $6.72M
6. The Last House on the Left — $5.92M
7. Taken — $4.1M
8. Slumdog Millionaire — $2.7M
9. Madea Goes to Jail — $2.51M
10. Coraline — $2.14M

  1. I’m really surprized to see Knowing ahead of I Love You, Man although last Thurs/Fri the spin of Knowing went quickly from “Geez, isn’t that out yet” to “Hey – this was pretty good” on most fronts.

Taken is freaking me out. Imagine if it’s the highest grossing for the first quarter of the year. Wow.

  2. I am sad to see that Blart has finally fallen from the top 10. :)

  3. I am going to have to see Taken. Man what sustaining power! It’s been in the top ten for like a zillion years!

And yeah I am surprised that Knowing took the top spot. I would think in this environment comedy would rule the day. But ‘I love You..” still did really well!

  4. Kevin James is a hotter commodity than Watchmen.

  5. Kevin James is also much more accesible than Watchmen

  6. He is also a lot fatter than the Watchmen

  7. Ok, I gotta stop listening to this show while on the bus because I forget all the shit I want to say when I finally get to a computer…

BLINDNESS: so glad you liked this one Jay. I think it’s one of the best movies of 2008 for all of the reasons you mentioned. It’s way deeper than anything I imagined it would be and the minutiae and moral dilemmas the film brings about is fantastic. I seriously thought Kurt and I were the only ones on the planet who saw the greatness of this movie. It’s dark, it’s interesting, it’s well acted and directed. It’s also original. People always scream that nothing new, original and dark ever comes out of Hollywood. Well, here it is; it’s great, and everyone complains. It doesn’t fit into their comfort level so it isn’t good.

KNOWING: I agree that are so many moments of wtf in here and some pretty shitty acting from time to time. But the overall idea and where the story takes us makes up for all of that. I was really surprised at the moments when this movie works… it *really* works. This is the movie that M. Night Shyamalan wishes he could make.
