Alyssa Milano Replaces Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters Video Game

Even though it looks like a third Ghostbusters movie is finally going to happen, a lot of fans are still viewing the upcoming release of the Ghostbusters video game as the official sequel that they’ve been waiting for all these years. As previously announced, the story for the game was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and it will feature the voice talents of the entire original cast (except for Rick Moranis, that is). But hold on a second there. They may have convinced Bill Murray to record some lines, but you didn’t think a well-respected actress like Sigourney Weaver would have anything to do with a piddly little video game, did you?
News has come out this week that Weaver will not be reprising her role as Dana Barrett in the video game after all. While it is unclear if she declined for monetary reasons, it appears that Alyssa Milano will be stepping in to fill her shoes instead. Milano talked up the role like it was the opportunity of a lifetime: “I have so much respect for that character in the movie that I hope I do the position that she is in justice. I was just flattered to be asked to be part of Ghostbusters.”
The thing I don’t get is that she’s not actually playing Dana Barrett. Instead she is voicing a different character that will fulfill the same function in the game: Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn, a guest curator at the Natural History Museum. I’m sure no one will even notice as far as the game is concerned, but the bigger question is whether or not Weaver would consider returning for the third movie. I suppose it’s looking doubtful, which is a real shame. Will you miss Weaver’s presence in Ghostbusters 3? Ghostbusters: The Video Game is currently slated for release on June 16th.

After Weaver turned down the video game, she changed her mind and decided that she did want to be part of it when she found out Bill Murray would be involved in the video game after all. But the video game must have moved too far ahead in its production that it was too late for her to join the cast. If she wanted to be in the video game as long as Murray is involved I wouldn’t doubt her wanting to be in another Ghostbusters movie.

I had hoped the main game would have a co-op component, but sadly it does not because the developer thought story co-op would gimp the “comedic timing” of the game. Somehow I don’t think these guys understand the difference between passive and active entertainment.

Posted by Niklas on March 24th, 2009As a HUGE GB fan, I prefer Dana NOT be a part of the new installments of the franchise. If Weaver showed up in a cameo to briefly explain what’s going on with her character and the relationships she has with the guys (as their first client, Peter’s ex and all) that’d be fine, but to revolve another whole plot, whether it’s a game or movie, would be redundant and stupid. The Ghostbusters DO have OTHER clients, after all.
