Sam Mendes’s Away We Go Trailer Starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph

Apparently one of the best kept secrets of 2008 was the fact that Sam Mendes was working on another movie to immediately follow Revolutionary Road — something a little less melodramatic and Oscar bait-y. I hadn’t heard anything about Away We Go until now, but after seeing this trailer it has definitely been added to my must-see list. It’s not so much that the trailer looked overly hilarious or groundbreaking, but I became more and more interested as each new cast member was introduced.
Just check out this line-up: John Krasinski, Maya Rudolph, Jeff Daniels, Catherine O’Hara, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jim Gaffigan, Paul Schneider, Allison Janney, and Melanie Lynskey. There’s plenty of comedic talent in there, but also a lot of acting chops as well. The screenplay comes courtesy of acclaimed writer Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) and his wife Vendela Vida. Could this do for John Krasinski what Little Miss Sunshine did for Steve Carell? Heck, he’s even got the beard. I suppose it might turn out to be just another ho-hum indie dramedy, but based on all the people involved, I’d say this is worth getting excited about. Check out the trailer below or watch it in HD over at Yahoo!. Away We Go hits select theatres on June 5th.

It looks pretty good, not as boring as that Revolutionary Road. But I could do without that obvious Indie soundtrack and illustrated font.
Posted by Bas on March 17th, 2009It’s trying a bit too hard to be the “quirky new comedy” with the hipster edge. But it did look good.
Posted by swarez on March 17th, 2009@ Bas: I think that’s a staple of Focus Features’ marketing department. Worst part is, the first thing I thought was “Who’s playing on this soundtrack?”
Sigh. I hate/love being pandered to.
Posted by mrbenning on March 17th, 2009Reminds me of Juno….but with a different older couple.
Posted by Tomas on March 17th, 2009I’ll agree with Bas.
Posted by Neil M on March 17th, 2009Looks like a Wes Anderson movie rather than a Sam Mendes Movie…I kept on asking myself is this a Sam Mendes Movie???
As for the movie its seems to fall into that ‘Quirky Drama comedy film which seems to be the flavor of the moment.
Like the soundtrack though…does anyone know that is?

I’m not blown away by the trailer, but since I suffered through “License to Wed” just to see Krasinski, I’ll probably see this as well. I’m weirdly digging the beard. Plus, it can’t be any worse than “Revolutionary Road”.
Posted by Liz on March 17th, 2009This movie looks great! Jim Gaffigan is the best comic out there so I am really excited he is in a Sam Mendes movie. I highly recommend Jim Gaffigan’s new one hour comedy stand up special “King Baby” that airs march 29th on Comedy Central. Can’t wait!!
Posted by Paul on March 17th, 2009I’m going to be so into this movie.
Posted by chris on March 17th, 2009I can’t wait to see this because of Jim Gaffigan’s involvement. Even in a bit part like Three Kings he’s hilarious.
Posted by Glendon on March 17th, 2009Everything looks good except I can’t stand Maya Rudolph in any capacity.
Posted by Goon on March 17th, 2009swarez is right, feels like it is trying way to hard. itinerary stapled to the inside of his thrift store jacket?! what, did Wes Anderson mate with Diablo Cody?
Posted by rus in chicago on March 18th, 2009Jim Gaffigan makes everything better. That man is hilarious. I didn’t know he had a new stand up special “King Baby”, especially on Comedy Central. Ohhhh its on later in the month (29th). my bad. I will watch it!
Posted by BaconIsMySavior on March 20th, 2009Did anyone go to the screening? I read that heavy metal guitarist , Dan Spitz’, twins are in this movie as Maggie Gyllenhaal’s baby. Can anyone verify? I’m a HUGE fan
Posted by producer777 on March 27th, 2009i saw it at the screening and it was so great
Posted by jojo on May 10th, 2009Some of you sound like whiny bitches. The “obvious” indie soundtrack and illustrated font speaks to a particular crowd of movie goers or for some people who would basically avoid movies unless it is something smart. It is not pandering its called marketing, and it sure as hell beats loud bangs, shiny machines and fiery explosions.
