New Line Developing a MacGyver Movie

Well it’s not the first we’ve heard of it, but now we can finally say it’s official! 1980s television icon and gadget-constructing secret agent MacGyver is headed to the big screen courtesy of New Line Cinema! Dino De Laurentiis’ daughter Raffaella will be producing the film along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff. Dino himself is on board as executive producer. No writers or directors are currently attached as of yet.
The project joins the ranks of upcoming feature films fueled by ’80s nostalgia, although they are probably hoping that the recent Saturday Night Live sketches starring Will Forte as “MacGruber” have also familiarized younger audiences with the concept. The question again becomes, how serious should the movie be? Supposedly they are aiming to make it a “serious and fun adventure movie”, but considering how rich the opportunities are for parody, I find it hard to believe it could be anything other than a comedy. New Line’s Richard Brener had this to say: “We think we’re a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise.” See what I mean? What are your thoughts on a MacGyver movie?
