Moviefone’s Top 40 Movies from the ’80s

The good folks over at Moviefone recently put together a list of the 40 Greatest Movies of the ’80s, and like all lists it’s sure to inspire some healthy discussion so I thought I would repost some of it here. Although it’s a list of the Best ’80s Movies, the first thing you’ll notice is that the vast majority of these films are rather timeless and don’t remind you of the ’80s at all. I suppose that’s a reasonable measure of just how well a movie holds up almost 30 or more years later, but if you grew up in the ’80s and are looking for a little nostalgia, the list is a bit short in that regard. You know I certainly would have put Ghostbusters higher than #40, and Back to the Future higher than #21, but hey, that’s just me. Their Top 10 is reprinted below, but you can follow the link afterward to see the rest of the list. Do you agree with their picks? Can you think of any classic ’80s flicks that are missing?
10. Aliens (1986)
9. Bull Durham (1988)
8. Caddyshack (1980)
7. Blue Velvet (1986)
6. Sophie’s Choice (1982)
5. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
4. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
3. Raging Bull (1980)
2. Blade Runner (1982)
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1982)

It’s great they have The Breakfast Club in there and I also agree with having Aliens in the Top 10, but where are such great movies as Conan, Dune or The Lost Boys? They definitely would’ve been on my Top 40 list.

Posted by Nemesis on March 11th, 2009No Footloose? Dirty Dancing? Splash? Airplane? The Natural? Ferris Bueller? The Fly? Adventures in Babysitting? National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation? The Little Mermaid?
Posted by Ashley on March 11th, 2009Back to the future is definitive 80’s, even in its own plot…and its the top grossing movie of 1985…what is more entrenched in the 80’s then that.
Ghostbusters at 40…HAHAHHAHHA…what the fuck?
Posted by Bob The Slob on March 11th, 2009I don’t agree with this list at all. A few of the movies in top 10 I haven’t even heard about.
Posted by Kasper F. Nielsen on March 11th, 2009For fun I tried compiling a quick list of my own for comparison. I stopped at 100 films, and I didn’t even include any of the ones in the Moviefone list. So, yeah, if you’re going to make a Top 40 list for an entire decade, you’re going to have to make a few cuts.
Posted by Wintle on March 11th, 2009I agree with this list since “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is the greatest movie ever!
Posted by Wolfpack on March 11th, 2009Die Hard-The greatest pure action film ever made

“and one not too many people have seen, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA…”
Are you serious? You are in the wrong place if you are expecting people not to have seen BTILC… (That’s what the real fans call it).
