28 Weeks Later Director in Talks for X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes Remake

Over the past 50+ years, Roger Corman carved out an impressive career for himself as the undisputed king of b-movies. While I am probably not too familiar with the vast majority of his catalogue, there is one Corman movie that I recognize almost immediately. Many moons ago (okay, maybe not THAT long ago), Jay and I were in a nerdy sci-fi themed band together, and the very first song title was “The Man with the X-Ray Eyes”. True story. Granted, I still haven’t actually seen the movie, but clearly that’s irrelevant. Now some ten years later, Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is in the process of remaking the 1963 film that served as the inspiration for this song.

X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes is about a mad scientist who comes up a with a drug that grants x-ray vision. When his funding gets cut off, he uses the drug on himself out of desperation, allowing him to see “not only through walls and clothes, but through the very fabric of reality”! Considering that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed 28 Weeks Later and Intacto, you can bet I’m interested in this update. I wonder if he will stick with the campy ’60s style, or if he will try to treat it a bit more seriously (which might be rather difficult, all things considered). David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman (Surrogates) will produce. If you’re at all curious, the original film seems to be available on YouTube in its entirety, although it’s probably not legal.

  1. The end of the Original scares the hell out of me, creepy and horrifying and still holds up today. Just the screenshot you posted from the final scene is creepy. Also I would just like to mention that I loved the Sci-Fi theme your old band had, those posters with The Day the Earth Stood Still and such were very cool looking.

  2. And i think that the version on YouTube might actually be legal, there showing features from MGM now.

  3. Enjoyable movie, but if your going to do remakes may as well be something like this, a movie most people haven’t seen and one which wasn’t perfect in the first place, but at the same time has a bold title and a concept which if updated well enough could be fun

  4. I’m so desensitized to remakes at this point, that I’m indifferent to any and all attempts. They could remake Watchmen tomorrow and I wouldn’t blink. That said, X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes is acknowledged by many of people as a great film, even if they’re not the sort to post here. I somehow doubt that Fresnadillo will top it, though I certainly hope he fashions something different and exciting.

  5. ha ha, that accidental push of the doctor through the window is to funny!
