New Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Trailer

With the massive influx of new trailers last week, the latest trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince kind of slipped under my radar. I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that this series is starting to overstay its welcome, but I suppose you have to finish what you start (especially when it’s making you billions of dollars). If there’s one good thing about Warner Brothers pushing the movie back to July, it’s that it gives them plenty of time to perfect all the visual effects, and this trailer does look impressive in that regard.
It also looks like the movie will be upping the ante in terms of action set pieces, although whether or not they can continue to build at the same rate for the final two films remains to be seen. At this point it’s going to have to be one insanely epic grand finale in order for it to feel satisfying. Check out the trailer below and see what you think. Are you still waiting on the edge of your seat for the next installment, or will you also be glad when this is all finally over? Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hits theatres on July 17th.

Posted by stevie_boy on March 11th, 2009I think the problem with the Harry Potter movies is that they are explicitly made for those people who have read and loved the books. You have almost no chance of understanding what exactly is going on if you didn’t read the books.
But for those who did – and that includes me – the movies make great pictures to a great story.
Posted by Benedikt on March 11th, 2009I’ve found the exact opposite with the films — that they leave enough out so that they don’t bog down or confuse the average viewer. I know a lot of die hard fans who bitch and moan about everything they leave out every time a new one hits theatres, but I’ve always felt that these are really great adaptations that really stand on their own as films. Having read the books just adds an extra layer of enjoyment for me as a fan.
That said, I completely forgot this was coming out because it totally fell off my radar.

I feel like that’s going to be difficult now that they’ve split the final movie into two films and seem intent on dragging it out for the almighty dollar. The first half of the last book has a lot of action at the start but not so much exciting stuff in the middle, so I’m interested to see how they split the story.
Posted by Liz on March 11th, 2009I dissagree. Thier not splitting up the seventh movie merely for more money. They are doing it because they know most the harry potter movie go-ers are all ready die hard fans of the books, and there is just so much stuff happening in the seventh book and so much information to absorb that they have to split it or people who havnt read the books will be completely lost, and the ones who have will be completely pissed at all the stuff that is left out. espescially sinse most the die hard book lovers (including myself) read the book before the movie hits, to pick out the little things they left out and have changed to fit the screen play. i.e. in the fourth book when harry goes into the penesive to barty crowches court hearing they accuse him of tortureing the longbottoms. In the fifth film you have the scene with harry and nevill in the room of requirements, and nevill talks about his parents and how it was really delourous umbridge. not to mention the third film mentions in no way the creators of the map (moony, wormtail, padfoot, and prongs)but in the next two films you here sirius black called “padfoot” many times over.
No they made the right decision to split the movie. Which is just fine with me because it gives us harry potter fanatics two extra years of something harry to cling on too before the magic completly dies.
Posted by rick on March 23rd, 2009I disagree completely! They are not splitting the seventh movie merely for monetary sake. They are doing it because they do know that there are a lot of die hard harry potter book lovers who go and see the movies and constantly bitch about all that was omitted, deleted, or changed. So they split the movie so they can put it a lot more information then what they could if it was just one single movie. There is so much action and information to adsorb that unless you have read the books there is no way you could follow all the jumping around that would have to take place in order to keep the movie down to 2 in a half hours. Not to mention all that happens in the seventh book is relevant in furthering the plot. To leave something out would just destroy the story. Plus all the die hard readers (as myself) usually read the book before the movie hits theaters, just so we know what is left out and changed to fit their story line.
i.e. in the fourth movie (the goblet of fire) when harry goes into the penisieve you see him sitting next to Albus Dumbledore at Barty Crowches judicial hearing. And they credit HIM for the use of the crutacious (or however you spell it) curse on the longbottoms. But in the fifth movie (harry potter and the order of the phoenix) you have the scene where harry and nevill are in the room of requirements and nevill tells him that it was Belatrix Lestrange.
And again in the prisoner of Azkaban (my favorite book) you never hear who actually made the marauders map and who moony, wormtail, padfoot and prongs are. And why harry’s patronous is a stag. But in the later movies you hear Sirius called padfoot many times over.
No they definitely did the right thing in making this a two parter movie. If only to give us die hard harry potter fans a few more years of harry to hold on to before the magic dies for good. Many fans have been reading harry potter since fourth grade and now are in our early twenties. A book like harry potter only happens once in a life time, and in my mind will never happen again. No book will reach the heights harry did. (twilight can suck a duck). But no, there is just too much in the seventh book for merely one movie to cover it all. Hopefully they end the first part of book seven with the escape at Malfoy Manor and the death of dobby.
Posted by rick on March 23rd, 2009Before reading the books, I made the mistake of watching Harry Potter 1 through 5 without any background knowledge. Needless to say this was a bad choice. And I did get confused a couple times, above all in the scene from the Order of the Phoenix when Harry is being interrogated and hints at Snape about Padfoot. I sat there for a while thinking “Wtf am I missing something omgomgomgomg”. When I went and read the books, I was surprised at how much the movies were lacking. Now I’m thoroughly searching the interwebz for deleted scenes, cause though the books are fantastic, I love to see stories come to life. Very excited.
