Michael Mann’s Public Enemies Trailer Starring Johnny Depp

I know a lot of people have been really looking forward to Michael Mann’s next flick Public Enemies, so hey… good news! The first trailer has finally hit the web. For those who don’t know, this is a biopic based on the notorious 1930s gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd and it stars Johnny Depp, Stephen Graham and Channing Tatum respectively. The unbelievably stacked cast also includes Christian Bale, Billy Crudup, Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, Leelee Sobieski, Lili Taylor and Emilie de Ravin, among others. (Okay, so they’re not all A-listers, but there are A LOT of recognizable names here.)
One interesting thing is that there seems to be some early concern regarding the use of digital video to shoot this movie, and I have to admit, it does look a bit bland and decidedly less stylish than we’re used to seeing from Michael Mann. At first glance, part of the problem might be the choice of Dante Spinotti as cinematographer, whose recent credits include X-Men: The Last Stand and a few other Brett Ratner flicks. However, Spinotti worked with Mann previously on The Insider and Heat, and he also shot L.A. Confidential, so there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be the right man for this job. I’m going to have to reserve judgment until we see a bit more, but for now I’d say I’m interested if not completely sold. Check out the trailer below and see what you think. Public Enemies hits theatres on July 1st.

looks like a big waste of time
Posted by blackmothra on March 4th, 2009i might just be homophobic against “crime movies” … but they all look boring to me.
another reason to love chitown
Posted by rus in chicago on March 4th, 2009The problem isn’t Spinotti who is one of the best cinematographers out there. The problem is that digital is still crap compared to film.
Being a Michael Mann film I’m guessing this will be 3 hours long and add nothing interesting to the 70 minutes 1940s film Dillenger.
Posted by TheAllKnowingGod on March 4th, 2009I don’t think you can really evaluate the video quality from an embedded video player.
It looks a bit generic but Mann, Depp, I’m not gonna worry about some trailer.
Posted by Rusty James on March 4th, 2009this looks awesome…i don’t know what you guys are talking about.
Posted by mike on March 4th, 2009I’ll definately be checking this out.
Posted by Aaron on March 4th, 2009Yeah this movie looks great, Michael Mann is a great director and this has some really talented actors/actresses.
Posted by Mitch on March 4th, 2009Well, Zodiac was shot on digital and it looked great (I thought anyways). It might not work as well with this type of movie though. Digital just doesn’t really pop like film does. I dunno, we’ll see. Regardless, I think it looks pretty cool.
Posted by Neil M on March 5th, 2009The trailer was a bit boring but I was glad to see that this felt more like it’d be an action film. Then I read an imdb user comment from a person who saw a test screening. They said:
“First, the movie ran about 2hrs 40mins. Probably an hour too long.”
And the user goes on to explicate some dismal qualities of the film. That runtime is daunting…this doesn’t look Godfather quality! I’ve lost interest. Even mah nigga Bale wielding a tommy gun with one hand can’t sway me. Hopefully Mann trims it down.
“it does look a bit bland and decidedly less stylish than we’re used to seeing from Michael Mann”
True. But Collateral looked good (while Miami Vice was a bit sterile). Public Enemies looks like this has practically no color timing which looks bland and feels odd for a period drama.
Posted by Ryan M. on March 5th, 2009You lost interest because of an IMDB user comment?!
What did the youtube community have to say about it?
L A M E.
Posted by Rusty James on March 5th, 2009Maybe Mann likes the look of the digital ghosting but that shit always takes me out of the movie.
Posted by swarez on March 5th, 2009Zodiac is a great example of how to treat digital video to make it look like film.
“First, the movie ran about 2hrs 40mins. Probably an hour too long.”
Don’t care about IMDB users, but this sums up most Michael Mann films I’ve seen. Worst being The Insider, which ends, and then goes on for another hour.
I did like Collateral, Heat is pretty good, but also extremely long I thought.
Posted by Henrik on March 5th, 2009It may be just me, but some of the dialogue and scenes in the trailer seem very similar to ones in Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde.
Posted by Cwoodward on March 5th, 2009“You lost interest because of an IMDB user comment?!”
As I said at the beginning of the post: “The trailer was a bit boring.” It’s running the risk of not being the chase film the trailer made me think it is (if the runtime stays the way it is).
Posted by Ryan M. on March 10th, 2009So when I say “I’ve lost interest” that doesn’t mean every shred of it because I see everything with Bale in it it. I’d probably only stop watching Bale’s film if he did gay porn.
