Adam Sandler Accused of Ripping Off You Don’t Mess With The Zohan

Lately it seems like we’re hearing about a new copyright infringement lawsuit every month or two, and most of the time the charges are completely bogus. Still, I thought this one was kind of funny anyway. A guy named Robert Cabell is suing Adam Sandler and Happy Madison Productions for supposedly stealing the idea to the movie You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. Cabell claims that they took the concept from his book, The Hair-Raising Adventures of Jayms Blonde, which also features a secret agent hairdresser. And that’s about where the similarities end.
Cabell’s character Jayms Blonde is gay, while Zohan is an Israeli Special Forces Soldier who fakes his own death. Hey, I just thought of something… Jayms Blonde sounds a lot like James Bond, another character who is also a spy. Maybe the estate of Ian Fleming should sue as well? Clearly this is just a publicity scam. I mean, the fact that the lawsuit was filed a year after the movie came out and made over $200 million worldwide pretty much sums it up. Still, it is interesting to note that You Don’t Mess with the Zohan was also co-written by Judd Apatow and Robert Smigel. It might actually be better for them to just admit to plagiarism rather than take credit for such dreaming up a terrible premise on their own.
