Keira Knightley to Star in Alex Garland’s Sci-Fi Thriller Never Let Me Go

I didn’t pay much attention to the headlines about a new Keira Knightley movie today, because I assumed (as I’m sure you all did) that it would be yet another period romance of some sort. But then something else caught my eye: the movie is written by Alex Garland, the same man who penned Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Sunshine (okay, so he wrote The Beach and The Tesseract too). Reading further, I found that the movie is also directed by Mark Romanek, the prolific music video director who helmed the Robin Williams thriller One Hour Photo. Okay, now I’m interested.
Never Let Me Go is the name of the film, and it once again finds Garland returning to the realm of science-fiction. The story focuses on three boarding school students who live isolated from the outside world, only to come to the harsh realization that they are not who they think they are. Romanek could lend some awesome visuals to the film, and I’m excited to see him get behind the camera again (his next project was supposed to be The Wolf Man, but he dropped out due to creative differences). As for Knightley… well, I’m sure she’ll add some nice visuals as well. Andrew Garfield (Boy A) and Carey Mulligan (An Education) will also co-star. The movie starts shooting this April.
Update: It has come to my attention that the movie is based on a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, and some of the write-ups out there (like the one in Variety) give away a pretty major spoiler. I have adjusted this post to remove said spoiler. Sorry about that. (Thanks Devindra!)
