Film Junk Poll: Who is Your Favourite Late Night Host?

As many of you know, Conan O’Brien filmed his final episode of Late Night from the NBC Studios in New York last week. It marks the first stage in a sort of “changing of the guard”, so to speak, as he heads out to L.A. to take over Jay Leno’s job, while Jimmy Fallon inherits the Late Night show from him. I know this particular subject is not directly movie-related, but I’m sure a lot of us watch the various late night talk shows, especially when movie personalities are involved. What I’m wondering is, out of all the currently active hosts, who is your favourite? Which ones do you watch on a regular basis? Cast your vote for one of these hosts in the poll below, and then feel free to continue the discussion in the comments.

  1. That’s actually a tough question to answer. My true answer is that I don’t watch any of them regularly at all. If I had to pick one to ALWAYS watch I guess it would be Conan. Stewart is good, but not something I need to see everyday.

Funny thing though, I know most people loathe Leno for some reason (I think a lot of his stuff is pretty funny). But I saw him live doing stand-up at a small casino once. I was in like the 5th row or something – about 20 feet away from him and he had the audience just rolling with laughter. I remember my Dad and I in tears by the end of it from laughing so hard. His stand-up is a lot different than the shit on TV. No censors and what-not. Still, he was fairly clean but funny as fuck.

  2. Conan is the funniest. Here’s hoping his move to the tonight show doesn’t change anything.

  3. Johnny Carson?

    Steve Allen?

  4. Conan for sure. He’s just so damn funny and likeable. What other show could have come up with something this retarded?

  5. When I started watching late night shows, I use to watch Leno when Brandford Marsalis was leading the band. But his show got tired quick and stopped watching his show unless they had a cool guest on. Same goes for Letterman.

I have always loved Conan O’Brien. His sketches with Triumph, The Year 2000 skits, Chuck Norris lever, etc…He still makes me laugh and I can’t wait to not having to stay up an hour later to watch him do his thing. He is the kinda guy I wish was a friend of mine.

I like how Carson Daly is at 0% atm. He sucks ultimate balls.

  6. Why is Jimmy Fallon on this poll? He hasn’t even hosted one episode yet!

  7. True, but he’s been doing some online videos and things leading up to the first episode. I don’t expect him to get many votes, but I thought some people might be really excited about his show for some reason.

  8. I hardly ever watch late night. If I do, it’s usually just clips on YouTube. That said, David Letterman wins, easily. His sense of humour is goofy and fun, and he has great rapport with his guests. Political and crude humour doesn’t do much for me.

  9. I haven’t seen a lot of Conan. The only show I rememeber watching was when he came to Canada several years ago, and he shot a segment at The Beer Store about half a mile from my house.

  10. I voted for Conan but he’s neck and neck with Letterman in my view.

  11. Weird so many people like Stewart. Looks like it’s all people that currently do it so no Johnny. Letterman would obviously be the best for his time (which has long since past). Ferguson is also doing some interesting stuff. We talked about talk shows for a while on our podcast last night I’ll post that in awhile. Hopefully before Conan starts in June.

  12. Craig Kilborn

  13. Jerry Hubbard?
    Space Ghost?
    Ed The Sock?

  14. Conan is the only one that makes me laugh. Easiest film Junk poll choice ever.

  15. My Late Night List
    1. Craig Ferguson is the best current talk show host. He is funny, slightly unpredictable, and he infuses his show with a sense of honesty that is refreshing.
    2. David Letterman I’ve watched since I was a little kid. He still has the occasional flash of greatness (Whenever he jokes about McCain/someone he genuinely dislikes), I can’t stand his band leader, but Letterman deserved better ratings than the Leno Tonight Show.
    3. Conan has been a constant source of mirth and entertainment, but these last few years he has been phoning it in. That said his last show was something really special, and I look forward to following him to the tonight show.

I don’t consider John Stewart/Stephen Colbert to be part of the same late night universe as these other hosts, although I regularly enjoy both of their shows.

    4. Jimmy Kimmel has a good monologue but I can’t stand his interviewing style, or in reality his lack of one. Still he has some great segments on his show, especially the intentional bleeping and his live outdoor stage for musical guests.

Jay Leno/Carson Daly can just go away. I would never watch their shows.

I’ll give Jimmy Fallon a chance, even though I disliked him on SNL. I didn’t like Tina Fey on SNL either, but I enjoy 30 Rock immensely. So new show, new outlook.

    I voted for Craig Ferguson.

  16. I’ve been watching David Letterman literally since I was 3, back then he told so many Bob Dole jokes that I assumed his name was Bob Dole. I still find him funny today so I have to vote for him. But Conan is good too and i’m looking forward too his gig on the Tonight Show. Hopefully Leno’s primetime Variety Show dies quickly so we don’t have to worry about that, I don’t like that guy, what kind of asshole hides in a closet? Jusst kidding, sort of. I enjoy Craig Ferguson too.

  17. Conan also has the added bonus of having the best late night band on TV.

  18. Ha ha Carson is only beating Jim Fallon (who is essentially a dead guy since he has never hosted) by .5% WHAT A DOUCHE! HIS DOUCHENESS COMES THRU THE SCREEN. I watched like 2 minutes the other night and he had lifted the old bit used by Kilborn were he controls the music from the desk. WHAT A HACK!

  19. Man oh man. There is no love for Colbert in this group.

I used to be really into Leno’s ‘headlines’ and Letterman’s “Will-It-Float” segments, but, like… since switching to The Colbert Show, nothing’s quite as funny…
