This Week on DVD: Sex Drive, What Just Happened, Dear Zachary

This week’s DVD releases are just almost as dull as the current theatrical releases, but let’s dig through these titles and see if we can find a few gems. The teen sex comedy Sex Drive is out today (which I’ve heard is better than you might think), along with the Hollywood-skewering What Just Happened starring Robert DeNiro, and the final Futurama direct-to-DVD movie. Also out this week are a couple of acclaimed documentaries, Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father and The Matador, and some classics on Blu-ray including The French Connection, Akira, and Vanishing Point. Last, and probably least: Freezer Burn: The Invasion of Laxdale starring Tom Green and Crispin Glover!

I’ll wait for Akira to come down from the $30 (USD) price, then maybe. Actually I’m importing a few blurays this week. Death Note just came out in Japan. Not sure if it has subs though.
Posted by joe on February 24th, 2009the last Futurama movie is damn fine, my second fave of the four, but I think this one packs the most of what Futurama fans want into one package, and has a satisfying end to the series (if it indeed is the end)
Posted by Goon on February 24th, 2009@joe: What site do you use to import? Also…
When I saw the news of an Akira Blu-ray and this was my insane reaction:
[O-M-to-the-fucking-G!!! Akira is one of my top five favorite movies of all time! Praise sweet Jesus, Allah, and Xenu because I’m going to die from over-excitement!
I JUST CHARGED MY CREDIT CARD LIKE MOTHERFUCKING GAMBIT AND HURLED IT AT AMAZON.
The mere sight of the immaculate blue plastic case encumbered in cellophane will cause a geek aneurysm so massive that my brains will splatter upon it’s glorious surface. I will be fine with that because the last thing I saw would be the most divine object to ever. EVER!!!]
I’m sane again.
Posted by Ryan M. on February 25th, 2009I saw Akira on the big screen not too long ago, so I wasn’t ready to see it again right away. I’m actually into “live action” asian movies more than anime, personally. Though Akira is probably a must own. I think the high price on it is because the first print edition has some special packaging/booklets. I don’t need that stuff.
I use yesasia or playasia (.com). Usually yesasia because they give free shipping and sometime you can get buy 2 get 1 free or a capsule toy or something. Playasia usually has cheaper video games though.
If anyone knows how I can import Euro blurays, please tell. I haven’t found a single site that will ship to North America.
