Seymour Philip Hoffman Skullcap Mystery Solved

Who would have thought that the most talked about fashion statement at this year’s Oscars would come from Philip Seymour Hoffman (or, as Alan Arkin calls him, Seymour Philip Hoffman)? Indeed, Hoffman’s mysterious black skullcap seemed to intrigue just about everyone who saw it, and had a lot of people asking what he could possibly be hiding underneath it. The answer? His hair.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Hoffman chose to wear the hat at both the Academy Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards because he’s currently in the midst of a role that involves “crazy hair”, and he’d “rather deal with hat jokes”. Pretty boring, right?
In case you were wondering, though, the movie he’s currently shooting is his directorial debut, Jack Goes Boating, based on the play by Bob Glaudini. It’s a romantic comedy of sorts, about “two potheads falling in love”, with the love interest being played by the fabulous Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone, The Office). Supposedly Hoffman’s character sports blonde dreadlocks and smokes a bong quite frequently. Clearly this sounds awesome, and I’m very curious to see Hoffman direct. Look for Jack Goes Boating to hit theatres later this year.

Damn. And here I was hoping he was going to pull the cap down over his face and steal Heath’s oscar.
Wouldn’t THAT have been something? (And by ’something’ I mean ‘awesome’.)
Posted by Falsk on February 24th, 2009I feel like he’s worn a hat like that to the Oscars before, so it didn’t strike me as odd on any level.
Posted by Liz on February 24th, 2009I am confident with Hoffman’s directing skills. He has done lots of theatre directing so this should be a no brainer for him because he’s working on stage and on film.
