Diablo Cody to Produce Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament

Everyone’s favourite hipster screenwriter Diablo Cody is doing much more than just writing scripts these days. After taking an executive producer role on both the Showtime series United States of Tara and the upcoming Megan Fox horror/comedy Jennifer’s Body, she is now set to take on a producer role for an adaptation of S.G. Browne’s Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament. In this case, however, she won’t actually be writing the script; those duties will fall to a guy named Geoff Latulippe. The project finds Cody once again working with the good folks at Fox Searchlight.

Breathers, which hits stores on March 3rd, is described as a zombie romantic-comedy (as opposed to Shaun of the Dead, which was a romantic comedy with zombies). The story focuses on some poor sap named Andy who dies and comes back as a zombie, but struggles to come to terms with such a massive change his his life. It isn’t until he attends an Undead Anonymous meeting that he makes some new friends and learns to enjoy the simple pleasure of eating human flesh. I can kind of see why Cody was brought on board for this, especially since two of the zombies that Andy meets are Rita, a “sexy recent suicide”, and Jerry, “a twenty-one-year-old car crash victim with an exposed brain and a penchant for Renaissance pornography”. I’m sure pop culture references will abound. With Diablo Cody’s name on it and the fact that it involves zombies, this is clearly a cult hit in the making.

  1. I think Shaun of the Dead was a “zombie romantic-comedy” before it was a “romantic comedy with zombies”.

All this talk of Shaun of the Dead and Diablo Cody makes me think of Spaced and how awesome it is….and WOW: a movie where the leading roles are zombies definitely sounds interesting.

I’m off to read the Amazon preview…

    …and dammit there isn’t one.
