Watchmen To Become a Summer Blockbuster After All?

Egad… it appears that Warner Brothers have found a way to make even more money off of Watchmen than we initially anticipated (and after that lawsuit they’re going to need every penny they can get). In addition to the March 6th theatrical release of the film and the Watchmen Motion Comics / Tales of the Black Freighter DVD releases, there is a good chance they will be re-releasing an even longer director’s cut of the film right in the middle of the summer.
Zack Snyder told MTV that his director’s cut is three hours and 10 minutes long, and also “considerably more violent… and sexier”. Assuming that the regular release does well, the director’s cut will be released sometime in July — but only in New York and L.A. I wonder if they will follow The Dark Knight’s lead and re-release the movie in Imax as well? Probably not, since it could cut into The WB’s other major July release, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Either way, the Watchmen hype is already reaching a saturation point, and I wouldn’t be surprised if people are tired of hearing about it by then anyway. I can probably wait for DVD to experience the full extent of Dr. Manhattan’s package.

So … wait for the directors cut and see the better version OR go and see what is an inferior product? I don’t get the marketing wizards logic on this one at all.

If repeated enough the masses will believe it to be.
Posted by Tomas on February 21st, 2009I don’t think there was any doubt that this would be huge. It will be a block buster whether they release the directors cut or not.
Posted by swarez on February 21st, 2009It won’t do Batman numbers, far too few recognizable faces in it and far too obscure title for the mainstream, but it will do very well.
Hype is what drives the anticipation. Everybody wants to be part of the hype, so they get drawn and quartered when they find out it does suck because it was hyped. Good movies do not need hype. Hype is there to sell tickets and make a return for the duration of showing.
