Ebert and Roeper to Return with New Movie Review Show

Back in July, movie fans witnessed the end of an era when Disney/ABC announced that they would be taking their flagship movie review show At The Movies in a new direction that didn’t include Roger Ebert or Richard Roeper. Since that time, their replacements Ben Mankiewicz and Ben Lyons have moved in, with Ben Lyons quickly becoming one of the most hated men in showbiz. It seems like the very idea of intelligent discussion about movies could be on its last legs, and the so-called dumbing down of America continues.
But hold on a minute there… you didn’t expect Ebert and Roeper to just walk away quietly into the night, did you? Ebert previously hinted that he and Roeper were going to return in some way, and this week he confirmed it in his latest Answer Man column. In response to a question about the rights to his various show titles over the years, Ebert also added, “Another chapter to this saga will begin when Richard and I shortly announce a new movie review program.” Hey, it’s not much to go on, but at least we know that they haven’t abandoned us. Still, is it too late for Ebert and Roeper to regain their audience? An even more interesting question is whether or not Ebert will actually be able to appear on TV again, because last we heard, he still hadn’t regained his ability to speak. We’ll have more on their new show as soon as the full details are announced.

i probably sound like a total cock for asking this but, um, can ebert like, talk again? just wondering. other than that, i’m down for a new ebert/roeper show.
Posted by Joel on February 20th, 2009haha ok, i see you asked that same question in the last sentence. now instead of a cock i just look like a dunce.
Posted by Joel on February 20th, 2009Well, what I really miss is the podcasts. ABC used to take th TV show and then republish it as a subscribable podcast on iTunes. Then one day it stopped being updated.
Ebert/Roeper should embrace the digital age and just do a sponsored podcast (even just an audio one). Sign me up today.
Posted by Andrew James on February 20th, 2009I’m terribly excited. I can’t wait to set my DVR to catch intelligent criticism yet again.
Posted by Azucar on February 20th, 2009I hope it happens. Two Bens annoy the hell of me. I need intelligent dissection of movies again. Come back soon, E & R.
Posted by Branden on February 20th, 2009I watch the two Bens because Im a movie fan, but I miss Roeper. The guy is really good at this format. Im curious as to what capacity Ebert can return.

Posted by Joel on February 22nd, 2009Haha nice… thanks for posting that Joel. Clearly Ebert and Stephen Hawking are going to have to go head to head in a battle of the minds one of these days.
Posted by Sean on February 22nd, 2009Man, I don’t know that i’d be comfortable watching him on screen again, he looks so different.
