Monday Morning Box Office Report: Friday the 13th Slices and Dices the Competition

The return of Jason Voorhees was a pretty huge success over the Valentine’s Day weekend, scaring up over $42 million, nearly twice that of its closest competitor. I think we all knew it was going to do well… but not this well! Was it the gimmick of opening on Friday the 13th that did it, or is the franchise just so well-known that it attracted hordes of fans, both new and old? He’s Just Not That Into You and Taken also remained near the top of the charts, while Confessions of a Shopaholic opened at #4 and The International debuted all the way down at #7. Clearly horror remakes won’t be going away anytime soon people!
1. Friday the 13th — $42.2M
2. He’s Just Not That Into You — $19.6M
3. Taken — $19.2M
4. Confessions of a Shopaholic — $15.4M
5. Coraline — $15M

8. The Pink Panther 2 — $9M
9. Slumdog Millionaire — $7.15M
10. Push — $6.93M

The success of Taken is an argument against that illegal downloading will hurt a film’s box office chances. The film has been available online for months and months and has even been released on DVD in some countries already. Or is it just a sample of what a really good trailer can do to a film?
