Will Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell Be Rated PG-13 or R?

I may have been one of the few people on the planet who really enjoyed Spider-Man 3, but I know I’m not alone in my enthusiasm for Sam Raimi’s return to the horror genre, Drag Me To Hell. The movie is now pretty much complete and currently being prepped for a May release, and yet aside from a few photos that have popped up online, we still haven’t seen or heard much about it. (Heck, I didn’t even realize Justin Long was starring in it… and I’m not quite sure how I feel about that.)
Anyway, one of the few questions remaining is, what rating will be attached to the film? Bloody Disgusting reports that Rogue Pictures has been holding test screenings with two different cuts of the film, one of which is PG-13, and the other being an R. I think we all know which rating Raimi fans are hoping for, but will studio pressures force a more sanitized version for the theatrical release? The good news is, the death of the R-rated horror movie has been greatly exaggerated as of late. My Bloody Valentine 3-D has done better than both The Unborn and The Uninvited, and Friday the 13th seems poised to make quite a bit of money as well. But with Sam Raimi being a household name and Drag Me To Hell coming out in the midst summer blockbuster season, they clearly want this to reach more than just a cult audience. Are you looking forward to this movie? Would a PG-13 rating change how you feel about it? Drag Me To Hell hits theatres on May 29th.

Well, I’m sure we’re all hoping for the hard R. If it’s PG-13 in the theater, I’ll probably just wait until its out uncut on blu-ray to see it. However, a film named “Drag me to Hell” should be R without a question… I mean, come on.
Posted by Jon Rocks on February 9th, 2009I’m with you Sean. I didn’t mind Spiderman 3 as a comic movie it had more than one story going on and some strange stuff but it’s a comic movie and the film fit the genre. I’d imagine that this whole PG-13 R thing for theatrical release is kind of a tough decision. I mean you can make it more open to do well at the box office (maybe) if it comes out with a lower rating. Then if it does well they can afford to do the uncut version on DVD. I guess like most things it comes down to if people like what happens in the movie sans the violence.
Posted by Ian on February 9th, 2009They should be debating between R and NC-17, not R and PG-13
Posted by TheMovieVampire on February 9th, 2009I can’t see it working as well if Raimi has to tone down the violence. I mean, his sense of comedy is obviously very silly. The Evil Dead movies worked so well because of how over the top the horror was, which perfectly complemented the zany humor. If I can’t see eyeballs flying across the room into mouths, I’m going to be a tad disappointed. Let the man do what he does best, market it properly, and it’ll do well enough.

For reals…but the reality is if Raimi thinks it’s better as a PG-13 and the studio isn’t just raping him then I’ll agree–but we all know that isn’t the case.
