He wanted to cut the cancer theme from the original (basically the whole empathetic motivation for the film) and replace it with a Stifler-esque drunken road trip just for the hell of it. The fans hated it, used the only tool at their disposal (the internet), and did their damnest to force him to return it to its original form. After a plethora of delayed releases, and now only being released on 55 screens, it smacks to me of "yeah you got your way, but remember whose boss!". Several of my friends and I drove out and saw it at different times this weekend and we all loved it, and I haven't heard one bad thing from anyone who's seen it.
