Slap Shot Remake Gets a Director

Hey hockey fans, it looks like a remake of the seminal hockey comedy Slap Shot is indeed lacing up the skates as we speak. We first heard rumours about this sometime last year, but now they’ve got a director signed on and a screenwriter in place. According to Variety, Universal has hired Dean Parisot (Fun with Dick and Jane, Galaxy Quest) to direct the flick, from a script written by Peter Steinfeld (21, Be Cool, Analyze That). I also see episodes of The Tick and Curb Your Enthusiasm on Parisot’s resume, which could be a good thing.

Overall, I just find it odd that someone would want to remake this particular movie. Not that I think it’s sacred ground or anything, but it’s a cult classic with such a specific following that I honestly can’t see it being all that successful. On top of that, the original draws a lot of its humour from the style of hockey that was prevalent in the ’70s… things have changed a lot since then. Will The Hanson Brothers still connect with a younger audience? The article at Variety points to the success of The Longest Yard as proof of the market for sports remakes, but they forgot one important detail: that movie starred Adam Sandler. I think we all know what needs to happen here — someone get Mike Myers on the line ASAP!

  1. I agree this film was a product of its time. Remaking Paul Newman films is also a stretch.
