Tokyo! Trailer: A Triptych from Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Bong Joon-ho

A couple of years ago, a number of well-known directors collaborated on a film called Paris Je T’aime, a compendium of short films based in and on the city of Paris. It certainly wasn’t the first project of its kind, but it inspired a number of other new anthology films themed around specific cities. New York, I Love You premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and now the three-way art film Tokyo! is about to hit select theatres.
Tokyo! brings together the unique talents of Korean director Bong Joon-ho (The Host) and French directors Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Leos Carax (Boy Meets Girl). From watching the domestic trailer, it’s clear that this will be an experimental piece with some pretty crazy visuals, and definitely a lot less structured than either Paris Je T’aime or New York, I Love You. Tokyo is a fascinating city, and the question in the trailer is an interesting one: do we shape cities, or do cities shape us? I suspect the answer to that question may be too surreal for a lot of moviegoers, but I’d like to check this out nonetheless. Tokyo! opens in New York City on March 6th; for more info on upcoming screenings, visit the film’s official website.

This is showing for a week the detroit institute of arts theater, so I’ll definitely be checking it out. It’ll be especially interesting since I’ve spent a few weeks in Tokyo over the last few years.
