Sugar Trailer: From the Writer-Directors of Half Nelson

If you were a big fan of Ryan Fleck’s acclaimed indie drama Half Nelson (starring Ryan Gosling as an inner school teacher with a drug problem), you’ll be interested to hear that the trailer for his next film has hit the web, and it’s about… baseball? Fleck has teamed up once again with his writing partner Anna Boden (who also co-directs this time around) to give us Sugar, the fictional story of Dominican baseball star Miguel “Sugar” Santos, who is recruited to play in the American minor leagues.

I’m not a big baseball fan so under normal circumstances I probably wouldn’t give this movie a second look, but just from watching the trailer you can see that it’s a sports movie shot like an art house film. While that may alienate some of its core audience, the focus of the movie seems to be the struggle of Santos as an immigrant to the U.S., and all the obstacles that he must overcome. I’ll definitely give this one a look based on the strength of Half Nelson alone; check out the trailer below and see what you think. Sugar hits select theatres on April 3rd.

    I’m just skeptical about sports films. (Sorry Greg.)
