Gomorrah Poster Claims It Is The Greatest Mafia Movie Ever Made

One Oscar snub that no one seems to be talking about is the lack of a Best Foreign Language Film nomination for Matteo Garrone’s Gomorrah, the Italian mafia movie that won the Grand Prix at Cannes and earned rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival. I still haven’t seen the movie myself, but this new poster proclaiming it to be the “Greatest Mafia Movie Ever Made” is sure to turn a few heads. It also helps that Martin Scorsese’s name is attached, even though he had nothing to do with the production of the film.

Gomorrah looks to be a gritty re-invention of the mob movie, and the twist here is that it doesn’t take place in New York or New Jersey, but rather Italy itself. “City of Godfather” you might call it (I just came up with that now… not bad, eh?). The story is based on the real-life experiences of Roberto Saviano, a former member of the Camorra based in Naples. Since the release of the film, Saviano has received threats on his life and has been forced to take refuge under police protection. I guess that speaks to the authenticity of the film, and if the Rotten Tomatoes rating of 91% is to be believed, there’s probably more to it than just violence. An official U.S. release date has not yet been set, but hopefully we will see Gomorrah in theatres sometime this year. Check out the official trailer below.

  1. Hyperbole, hyperbole! I used to live in Napoli as a kid, and even then I could feel the presence of the Camorra; everyone knew they were elbows deep in any shit that went down in that town. Psyched about this movie, even if it isn’t the greatest mafia movie of all time (that would be Once Upon a Time in America, suck it Godfather!).

  2. At LEAST give it an Oscar for ‘Best Poster’! I’d put that on my wall…

  3. Man what a letdown. It took place in Neaples? Didn´t say it anywhere in the film that I noticed. Everyone should see the trailer or read the text in front of the credits of the film before seeing the film, otherwise there´s a risk you won´t understand much as a lot of the setup is there. D´oh!

Saw the blu-ray last week and the movie was so-so.

I love mafia movies… except for the one with Leslie Nielsen.
    :)

  4. It certainly appears to be worth a look, has a little “City of God” feel to it.

  5. Gomorrah was a huge disappointment. It’s not the best mafia film ever made; it’s hardly a good one.

  6. A terrific dark, gritty, and realistic film. Great cinematography. It’s hard to believe you’re not watching a documentary, Think “The Wire” in style, not “The Sopranos”.

If it’s slick entertainment you want you’ll be disappointed.

    mark

  7. to the author: get your facts straight…saviano is not a former member of the camorra..he is a journalist/reporter.

  8. Hi I have not yet seen this movie but it is on the film list, I like Mobster / Mafia movies because they really happened also because I understand Italian…

  9. This movie is great if you want to see what life is really like for these people. I rank it as one of my favorites. The book is even better.
