Film Junk Poll: What is the Best 3-D Movie?

There’s no question that 2009 is probably going to be a big year for 3-D movies, what with James Cameron’s Avatar coming out plus a number of other major releases, but I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at all the 3-D movies that we’ve seen thus far throughout the history of cinema. Whether it be the 3-D flicks of the ’50s, ’60s, ’80s or the present day, which one is the best? Which one makes for the most entertaining experience? Would any of them actually be considered good movies if you take away the three-dimensional gimmick? Choose one of the ten possibilities in the poll below, but as always, feel free to bring more titles into the discussion via the comments section.

I have only seen 3Dmovies at Disneyworlds. I vote for the Rick Moranis 3Dmovie, “Honey! I shrunk the audience” (what did you expect?).
Posted by Henrik on January 28th, 2009Henrik, I expected Captain EO starring Michael Fuckin Jackson, thats who hehe. I really want to see TNBC 3-D. I’ve had like 3 consecutive years to go see it at the theaters, but I never get around to seeing it.
As it stands My Bloody Valentine is the best 3-D movie I’ve seen in a long while.
Posted by Primal on January 28th, 2009I have seen that one as well (Captain EO) when I was superyoung and don’t remember much.
Posted by Henrik on January 28th, 2009I just saw the original “House of Wax” in 3D, and it was pretty good. That’s the only one I’ve seen with 3D Glasses. I did see “Friday The 13th, Part 3″ at the drive-in back when it was first released, but we didn’t have the glasses. We also saw Jaws 3 on cable back in Junior High, but again, no 3D Glasses either. I remember getting the old blue (or was it green?) and red glasses in the newspaper and watching “Creature from the Black Lagoon” in elementary school, but I don’t remember the 3D being very good on that. If Reed runs the behind the scenes on the Oscars video cast, maybe he can send it out in 3D. I want to see Greg’s butt tattoo coming at me in 3D…
Posted by paulm on January 28th, 2009I haven’t seen any of these in 3D, but I did see Bolt which was pretty cool. I also bought The Polar Express 3D on DVD (For my girlfriend). I couldn’t even watch the whole movie cause I got a headache about 5 mins into watching it.
Posted by Jamie on January 28th, 2009The only movie that’s actually still worth it in 2-D was Nightmare Before Christmas. I actually have seen a print of Creature From the Black Lagoon and the 3-D elements were no better than one of those holographic fleer trading cards plus it’s old and boring.
The best 3-D experience I’ve ever had was this Terminator live-action/cg show they have at universal Studis Florida. Live actors fight a T-1,000,000 (tons of T-1000s merged into one). IT WAS TOO AWESOME.
Posted by Ryan M. on January 28th, 2009Yeah they still have that Terminator show at Universal Studios in Hollywood and it’s pretty wicked. I guessing they’ll eventually have to release a new one to help promote Terminator Salvation or something.
Posted by Sean on January 28th, 2009You can get Captain EO on bit torrent. It’s the shit… Oh wait… i mean it’s shit.
Posted by Jon Rocks on January 28th, 2009I’ve seen about half of these and My Bloody Valentine 3D is the best on the list for me.
I took the kids to see Bolt in 3D and that was actually pretty awesome. That’d make my personal list.
Posted by Brett on January 28th, 2009No Love for SPACE HUNTER: ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE (Go Molly Ringwald!)
Most 3D, particularly the new plane-polarized light technology gives me a headache at about the 60 minute mark. The only feature that hasn’t was the (as Goon said) subtle and satisfying use of the technology in NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
I hear an equal artistry and restraint is applied to Henry Selick’s CORALINE, and I want to see that one, but mostly I’ll give 3D a pass and hope it dies a quick death.
