Writer/Director Mike White to Compete on The Amazing Race

It’s been a weird day for news about actors crossing over into other realms of “low brow” entertainment. First Mickey Rourke says he might be participating in Wrestlemania 25, and now apparently writer/director/actor Mike White is going to be on the upcoming season of The Amazing Race! Fresh off his stint as a juror at Sundance 2009, CBS revealed this week that White would be teaming up with his father Mel as one of the 11 teams competing in The Amazing Race 14.

White is perhaps best known for writing and co-starring in Richard Linklater’s School of Rock with Jack Black, but he also penned Nacho Libre, several episodes of Freaks and Geeks and wrote and directed Year of the Dog. His father is a writer and filmmaker too, in addition to being a gay rights activist (he realized he was gay when Mike was just 11 years old, but stayed married to Mike’s mother until all of their kids were in college). I’m not sure that Mike White is a big enough name to give the show a ratings boost, but either way it will give me a team to root for this season (well, either them or the ex-Miami Dolphins cheerleaders). The Amazing Race 14 premieres on Sunday, Feb. 15th at 8 pm EST. Check out Mike and Mel’s intro video below.

  1. This is just bizarre. I like Mike White though, he was great in The Good Girl. I believe he also wrote that script. I watched the Amazing Race in the first season, and it’s also the only show I’d ever consider auditioning for.

  2. I love Mike’s warped sense of humor and YES, he did write The Good Girl and I’ve read the script many times. It’s one of my all time favorites. I love the scenes where he’s standing at the door (as security guard) and letting the door open and close as he steps on the mat. That’s a brilliant statement in itself.
