Star Trek: The Original Series and First Six Movies Coming to Blu-ray in May

With J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movie coming to theatres in May and aiming to re-introduce the adventures of Kirk and Spock to a new generation, it only makes sense that Paramount would also want to give new viewers a chance to familiarize themselves with the origins of the franchise. What better way to do that than with brand new Blu-ray releases of both The Original Series and the first six Star Trek films? Although an official announcement has not yet been made, a lot of details have started to leak out, including an expected release date of May 13th — just a few days after the new movie hits theatres.

The Norwegian site Release.no managed to get a hold of the cover art for both Star Trek: The Original Series, Season 1 and a collection called “Star Trek: The Motion Picture Trilogy”. While it appears that this European release will only feature the first three films, The Digital Bits reports that in North America it will be a box set of the first six. They have also obtained the following information:

  • Star Trek I, II and VI will feature the original theatrical cut of the films
  • Extras will include famous fan commentary tracks for each film, as well as a featurette with select scenes from a Klingon performance of Hamlet by the Commedia Beauregard
  • The Original Series release will include both the original broadcast version and the new remastered version of each episode

Sounds pretty sweet. Either way, this is sure to be a pretty huge announcement, so we’ll keep you posted when the full press release comes from Paramount.

  1. It’s a shame that ST the motion picture only has the theatrical release and not the directors cut which I love to death.
I heard the reason for this is that the new FX weren’t rendered in HD so they will have to do that over again.
Still I have never seen the original cut of The Motion Picture so that it nice. But I’ll probably wait for the SE to be release which will most likely include both versions.

  2. Indeed swarez, the 143-minute, Director’s edition is far superior to the theatrical version.

  3. I hope this isn’t too confusing, but I think there are three versions of the first motion picture. I didn’t think the Director’s Edition was any better than the version initially released to DVD and video. I could be wrong, but I don’t think the theatrical version of the first motion picture has ever been released. Before the Director’s Edition, the version on DVD and video has always been a “longer version” which I thought was better because of the added scene with Spock and Kirk holding hands, and Spock explaining that V’Ger lacks the ability to feel.

I’m interested in the “famous fan commentary.” I think I’ll wait by the phone for the call to come down to Hollywood.

  4. They should put the one you and Jay did on there. Or you should do another one damn it. I need my Reed fix.

  5. swarez, I thought you had better taste than to enjoy my ramblings. :-)

You always seem to be so critical, but you do comment on some things you enjoy. In any case, thx for the nod!
