Monday Morning Box Office Report: Paul Blart Busts Box Office Wide Open

It was a good weekend for movie watching apparently, with four different flicks earning over $20 million including the #1 movie… Paul Blart: Mall Cop! Yes, Kevin James has proven that he can headline a comedy all by himself, and I am still pretty shocked that the movie managed to pull in over $33 million. Did anyone out there see it? Was it actually funny? Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino hung in for the #2 spot with $22 mil, while My Blood Valentine 3-D and Notorious both ended up notching just over $21 million. Hotel for Dogs rounded out the top 5, while Edward Zwick’s Defiance didn’t do so well, opening at #8 in its first weekend in wide release.
1. Paul Blart: Mall Cop — $33.8M
2. Gran Torino — $22.2M
3. My Bloody Valentine 3-D — $21.9M
4. Notorious — $21.5M
5. Hotel for Dogs — $17.7M
6. Bride Wars — $11.8M
7. The Unborn — $9.85M
8. Defiance — $9.21M
9. Marley & Me — $6.33M
10. Slumdog Millionaire — $5.9M

Posted by Ryan M. on January 19th, 2009I’m a big fan of Kevin James, I loved the King of Queens. So I hope his new movie is funny, and I wish him success.
Posted by Drew on January 19th, 2009I saw Blart … there were some funny lines that you could tell were written by Kevin James but the supporting cast (save Gary Valentine) really brought the movie down … especially the bad guy, but his lines were TERRIBLE so I’m not putting all the blame on him. I actually thought that the Segway stuff managed to stay somewhat fresh, he used it in a lot of different comedic ways. Worth checking out if you’re a KJ fan otherwise … stay away!

I read a positive review for Paul Blart. Someone in Hollywood must like him, because I thought all his previous movies that he co-starred in didn’t do so well. But he keeps being employed. I’m surprised that such an innocuous movie could make so much money.
Drew, I’m a fan of Kevin James as well. I loved King of Queens. That series was on for a long time, and it never got any respect at awards time.
