Marvel Drops Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury?

By now, every self-respecting comic book fan on the planet knows that Samuel L. Jackson played the role of Nick Fury, leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., in a short scene that came after the end credits of Iron Man. Everyone was expecting to see more of him in upcoming Marvel films, particularly The Avengers, since Fury is instrumental in assembling the team. However, it now looks like Sam Jackson may not continue playing the role of Nick Fury after all.
According to the L.A. Times, talks have broken down between Jackson and Marvel, leading Jackson to remark, “There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], ‘We’re not making that deal.’”. What is Marvel thinking? First they drop Terrence Howard in favour of Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2, now they’re dumping Sam Jackson as well? At this rate, they’re going to have a fanboy mutiny before the next movie even hits theatres! I have to admit, I don’t really care whether or not Nick Fury is involved in future Marvel films, but the only way I’d accept someone other than Samuel L. Jackson in the role is if they brought back David Hasselhoff! Something tells me that’s not happening either. What do you think, is this all just a negotiating tactic? Can Marvel actually make The Avengers without Jackson as Fury?

First, let them make successful movies of Captain America (good chance) and Thor (bad chance, I think). That’s more important than Sam Jackson in or out.
Posted by Bas on January 14th, 2009I don’t think any fan boys cared about Terrence Howard being dropped for a better actor. A Sam Jacksonless Marvel U would suck though.
Posted by Paul on January 14th, 2009meh. i’m all for the hoff!!

Ever seen Hustle & Flow? Didn’t think so…cause you’d know the two are right on par w/ each other.
I’d like to know the real reason why all this actor dropping is going on…doesn’t make sense.
Posted by Ryan M. on January 14th, 2009Sam L. is in so many movies, he’s become a joke, its sad. The end of Iron Man was stupid and pointless. I just cant take him serious. Give him more Snakes and Planes. I would watch THAT.
Posted by Laserbeard on January 14th, 2009Damn. Russell Crowe or Harrison Ford would be good but not cover the economic crisis. Well I bought most of my Marvel comics in the early 90’s so I’m not going to cry for Marvel. If they’d just invested the money I spent on comics back then and then cashed it out about 6 months ago then they’d have been fine.
Posted by Ian on January 15th, 2009I have to agree with Laserbeard, Samuel L. Jackson is in so much shit (as in crap) that though I enjoy the man’s better roles, I could care less if he’s in a movie. Actually at this point, Sam Jackson usually makes a movie suspicious in my mind.
I also still haven’t seen the end of Iron Man, so I don’t really care if he isn’t in it or whatever, but what they DO need to do is figure out for the sequel is how to make a more satisfying third act than the last one. CGI blobs clobbing each other? Am I paraphrasing you guys right? Spot on. Tired of that shit.
Posted by Joel on January 15th, 2009Remember when having Samuel L Jackson in a movie was a good thing?
Posted by swarez on January 15th, 2009I agree. Just about every cool comic book or action movie has Samuel L. Jackson these days. I mean, don’t get me wrong. Samuel L. Jackson is a pretty cool actor, but c’mon!! Stop playing him out!!!
Posted by ShenEvil44 on January 15th, 2009Jackson has become a parody of himself, like Pacino and De Niro and doesn’t seem to be trying anymore.
Posted by swarez on January 16th, 2009Sam Jackson is like Nicolas Cage. Sam Jackson in A Time to Kill, Unbreakable or Black Snake Moan is not the same Sam Jackson that is in Star Wars, Snakes on a Plane, The Spirit or Iron Man.
I love both sides of both men though.
Posted by Henrik on January 16th, 2009samuel jackson is overrated and can go suck a turd
Posted by twililghtfox on January 19th, 2009I would have preferred Dennis Quaid in the role, but they choose Jackson and they should fight to keep him. Damn I hate recasts.
Posted by HollywoodDream on January 19th, 2009Whatever, Dump Jackson and get Laurence Fishburne to play Fury, everyone is mistaking them for each other anyway.
Posted by moviemind on February 11th, 2009bring back the hoff and re do the iron man scene as the pre credit scene to iron man 2 thats what i think hoff is more fury then jackson can ever be either that or scrap the ultimate fury in the movies and just start a reboot on the 616 fury movies
Posted by steve on March 20th, 2009you guys are duches. samuel l jackson is better than david asshole huaf .
