Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell in Talks for Iron Man 2

Right about now the internet is all fired up about a couple of juicy Iron Man 2 casting rumours that have just hit. I can’t say I’m overly psyched for this flick, but I’m hoping that as more news comes out about it, my interest will be piqued. This is certainly a good start.

Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter claim that Mickey Rourke is on the verge of landing the role of the main villain in the movie, but they seem to disagree on who that villain might be. While they agree that he will be a heavily-tattooed Russian guy, Variety says he is Crimson Dynamo, while THR says his name is actually “Whiplash”. Obviously someone got their wires crossed, but it’s still unclear who speaks the truth here. Also, as if that wasn’t enough, Sam Rockwell is apparently in talks to play rival businessman Justin Hammer.

Clearly the practice of casting critically-acclaimed and/or character actors in comic book movies is now becoming the norm. While I don’t always agree that super talented actors are a good fit for the typical funnybook fare, in this case I trust that director Jon Favreau knows what he is doing. He was the guy who fought for Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, and now everyone can’t stop talking about how his career has been miraculously resurrected. Mickey Rourke is another guy in the midst of a comeback, and after Sin City and The Wrestler, he’s back on everyone’s radar. Please just tell me Rourke and Rockwell will have a little more to work with than Jeff Bridges had in the first film. I was embarrassed for the guy once he donned that damn Iron Monger suit. What do you think, does this news guarantee that Iron Man 2 will be even better than the first?

  1. It’s a comicbook movie and it should be fun. I’m personally most excited that they are bringing in Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky to storyboard and hopefully co-direct the action sequences. That should be cool.

  2. I think they should skip the Russian idea for Rourke. He should be a talking bottle of whiskey that plagues and temps Stark throughout the movie.

  3. Sort of a mid 90’s, John Travolta-esque move for Rourke to help solidify his comeback. For Rockwell this is a paycheck grab.

Both actors are beyond this sort of tripe. Another movie about a guy in a robot suit fighting another guy in a bigger robot suit. Yeah!

  4. I’m still very disenchanted over the lack of Terrance Howard.
