Paul and Alex are immediately my friends for also loving Speed Racer. I love it more and more each time I see it, and was in my top 10 of the year, critics be damned.

A friend of mine in Japan sent me a Japanese poster of Speed Racer, and seeing the logo turned into Japanese Characters and everything else moved around, it made me believe that if the movie actually WAS in Japanese, so many more people would have understood it.

I’m in the camp that loved “Speed Racer!” I’m predicting a sweep for “The Happening” which is so awful that it was funny. And Rambo was awesome! That better not even make the cut.

I was surprised at how MUCH I liked Speed Racer, even after hearing all the press saying how bad it was. I thought it was fun and yeah it’s an amazing BD.

Also, Rambo ruled. It was a good action flick. I have no idea why it’s on this list. There’s so many more movies made every year that are actually plain bad and not “fun bad”.

Speed Racer:

It was shot in High Def and they pushed the deep focus of HD rather than fought it…this makes it one of the best looking BDs you can buy. Show someone clips of Speed Racer, Baraka, Planet Earth, and something full-CG like Resident Evil: Degeneration and they’ll stop saying bullshit like “HD looks the same”.

“Nights in Rodanthe.” Easily the worst picture I saw this year. Couple that with “Untraceable” and Diane Lane seriously nuked the fridge in 2008.

My main problem with Speed Racer is that I found it to be boring, but I’d like to give it another shot on Blu-ray at some point. I don’t know if we were fully able to appreciate the visuals while watching it at the drive-in.

Also, I didn’t think TDTESS was that bad.

In general I agree with Goon though… the Razzies are more about ribbing big name celebs than truly celebrating the worst in cinema from the past year.

Speed Racer was too loud and fuchsia for my liking. Plus I couldn’t get over the casting choices long enough to suspend my disbelief. I guess as a pure popcorn flick, I could see how some people could enjoy it. Worst big budget movie 2008 has to be The Day The Earth Stood Still.

I thought Speedracer was great. It might not have been some people’s cup of tea but it wasn’t a bad movie. It had fun, style, and a coherent reasonable (yes formulaic but so do most “good movies”) story.

Wait a second…Indy 4? How did I miss that before. Yeah I was laughing when that UFO emerged from that tomb or whatever like everyone else, but the rest of the movie was pretty solid.

Andrew, definitely give Speed Racer a chance. It’s just damn fun. Not to mention excellent demo material for anyone’s home theatre. I still can’t believe it got bashed the way it did.
