Who’s in the Running for the 29th Annual Razzie Awards?

The official nominees for this year’s Razzie Awards (ie. the worst movies of the year) won’t be announced until January 21st, but in the meantime it seems that the “shortlist” of potential candidates has found its way onto the web via one of the registered voters over at the MTV Movies Blog.
A lot of the usual suspects are on the ballot including not one but two films from Uwe Boll, Paris Hilton’s The Hottie & The Nottie, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, and both Disaster Movie and Meet the Spartans (apparently as one combined option). I’m a little disappointed to see Rambo in the running, although I doubt it will end up getting nominated. Alas it looks like The Spirit did not make the cut, despite a last-minute campaign by fans.
Check out the full Razzie ballot below, and then let us know who does and doesn’t deserve to be there.

Oh come on, High School Musical 3 was not *that* terrible as far as bad movies go.
Posted by Liz on January 7th, 2009I hate the Razzies. They just pick on a few movies every year starring whatever celeb they want to make fun of. It’s all about the headlines.
The Razzies are to the worst movies of the year as is what MuchMusic Fromage was to music videos during its last few years – just making fun of the same shit for ratings rather than how it started out: truly showcasing the odd and strange.
Posted by Goon on January 7th, 2009How was Cruise nominated for worst actor? From what I’ve gathered most people thought he was average to good, not terrible.
Posted by Neil M on January 7th, 2009Stallone? Rambo was awesome.
I liked Speed Racer, too. It was just too long. Hey, what time is it where you guys are/
Posted by Brian Who Likes Airplanes on January 7th, 2009I really REALLY don’t get how Rambo deserves to be on this list. It was gory fun!
Posted by Ryan M. on January 7th, 2009Believe it or not, Postal was nowhere near the worst movie of the year. Honestly.
Posted by ottobud on January 7th, 2009“Believe it or not, Postal was nowhere near the worst movie of the year. Honestly.”
On the contrary, if I cared enough to vote you can rest assured it would be for Postal. It’s not even shocking, its just sad the lengths Boll went to to try and seem relevant and different. It’s a pathetic waste of time, completely unwatchable. I’d rather sit through Meet the Spartans.
Posted by Goon on January 8th, 2009By all accounts (I have not seen either), HM3 and Speed Racer were decent. In fact, I’ve seen Speed Racer showing up on a few people’s “best of” lists. People I trust. I really want to see this actually.
Posted by Andrew James on January 8th, 2009Andrew, definitely give Speed Racer a chance. It’s just damn fun. Not to mention excellent demo material for anyone’s home theatre. I still can’t believe it got bashed the way it did.
Posted by Neil M on January 8th, 2009Wait a second…Indy 4? How did I miss that before. Yeah I was laughing when that UFO emerged from that tomb or whatever like everyone else, but the rest of the movie was pretty solid.
Posted by Neil M on January 8th, 2009I thought Speedracer was great. It might not have been some people’s cup of tea but it wasn’t a bad movie. It had fun, style, and a coherent reasonable (yes formulaic but so do most “good movies”) story.
Posted by Ian on January 8th, 2009A friend of mine sent me a Speed Racer poster from Japan. Seeing everything in Japanese only made me think “Wow, if this movie HAD been in Japanese, so many more people would have understood it”
Posted by Goon on January 8th, 2009Speed Racer was too loud and fuchsia for my liking. Plus I couldn’t get over the casting choices long enough to suspend my disbelief. I guess as a pure popcorn flick, I could see how some people could enjoy it. Worst big budget movie 2008 has to be The Day The Earth Stood Still.
Posted by Mane on January 8th, 2009My main problem with Speed Racer is that I found it to be boring, but I’d like to give it another shot on Blu-ray at some point. I don’t know if we were fully able to appreciate the visuals while watching it at the drive-in.
Also, I didn’t think TDTESS was that bad.
In general I agree with Goon though… the Razzies are more about ribbing big name celebs than truly celebrating the worst in cinema from the past year.
Posted by Sean on January 8th, 2009“Nights in Rodanthe.” Easily the worst picture I saw this year. Couple that with “Untraceable” and Diane Lane seriously nuked the fridge in 2008.
Posted by Andrew James on January 8th, 2009Speed Racer:
“excellent demo material for anyone’s home theatre”
“I’d like to give it another shot on Blu-ray at some point”
It was shot in High Def and they pushed the deep focus of HD rather than fought it…this makes it one of the best looking BDs you can buy. Show someone clips of Speed Racer, Baraka, Planet Earth, and something full-CG like Resident Evil: Degeneration and they’ll stop saying bullshit like “HD looks the same”.
Posted by Ryan M. on January 8th, 2009I was surprised at how MUCH I liked Speed Racer, even after hearing all the press saying how bad it was. I thought it was fun and yeah it’s an amazing BD.
Also, Rambo ruled. It was a good action flick. I have no idea why it’s on this list. There’s so many more movies made every year that are actually plain bad and not “fun bad”.
Posted by Paul on January 8th, 2009I’m in the camp that loved “Speed Racer!” I’m predicting a sweep for “The Happening” which is so awful that it was funny. And Rambo was awesome! That better not even make the cut.
Posted by Alex on January 12th, 2009Paul and Alex are immediately my friends for also loving Speed Racer. I love it more and more each time I see it, and was in my top 10 of the year, critics be damned.
A friend of mine in Japan sent me a Japanese poster of Speed Racer, and seeing the logo turned into Japanese Characters and everything else moved around, it made me believe that if the movie actually WAS in Japanese, so many more people would have understood it.
Posted by Goon on January 12th, 2009Speed Racer is a great movie…
