Bollywood’s Back to the Future Remake: Action Replay Starring Akshay Kumar?

Bollywood borrowing ideas from Hollywood is certainly nothing new, but if this next story turns out to be true, it could start a new trend in remakes. According to RealBollywood.com, Indian director Vipul Shah is developing a film called Action Replay that is based loosely on the classic 80’s film Back To The Future starring Michael J. Fox. Exactly how much of the original story would be retained is still unclear, but the movie is slated to star Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai in the male and female lead roles respectively. What I want to know is, who’s going to play Doc Brown?
I’ve been trying to find a bit more information on this project, but it’s hard to nail down solid facts. Vipul Shah has been quoted as saying that the movie is actually not called Action Replay “because there’s absolutely no action in it”. He also seems reluctant to categorize the movie ahead of time, and hasn’t really mentioned Back to the Future in any interviews that I’ve found.
“I’ve just wrapped up the script and I’m at a loss as to how to categorize it. It’s something neither Akshay nor I have done before. When I directed my first film Aankhen, I had defined it, somewhat wrongly, as a fantasy thriller. I’m not getting into classification for my new film until I’m sure. Many films fail not because they’re bad but because they don’t tell the audience what to expect.”
Shooting on Action Replay is expected to commence in February and I doubt we’ll hear much about it in North America, but I wonder if it might remind some studio execs somewhere that Back to the Future is one of the few ’80s franchises that currently remains untapped for sequels or remakes. Surely Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale can’t keep their integrity intact forever… can they?

As long as Hollywood doesn’t take to the remake process on this thing I’ll be fine.

God I agree. Bollywood can do anything they want…who cares. Leave BTTF alone!
Posted by Bob The Slob on January 5th, 2009if anything…BACK TO THE FUTURE teaches the one lesson that all they other disgraced, ruined, and worn out franchises should have learned…WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES ITS RARE AND SHOULD BE CHERISHED AS SUCH.

Posted by WTF on January 10th, 2009Sounds like a good idea, but the question is “Is it a good idea to remake Back to the Future”?
Posted by Brandon K. on January 17th, 2009Oh dear lord… I really think that us worrying about india’s film industry remaking BTTF is just silly. We all know that it wont be official for one thing and for another…. it wont be counted as an attempt on BTTF because its foreign and they can’t possibly understand what is so AMERICAN about BTTF.
I’m not worried. NOTHING can top Back to the Future in any way, shape or form. And considering MJF’s condition in life as of now its just in very poor taste to even think about it in Hollywood’s case.
And I SERIOUSLY believe that our Hollywood isn’t GOING to EVER touch it… out of respect… they would have ALREADY tried if that were the case.
You cannot replace one damn thing in BTTF, so why replace any of it at all? Christopher Lloyd? COME ON! NOT ONE SOUL could ever capture the ESSENSE of Doc Brown AT ALL. ONLY HIM. and ONLY Michael J Fox will EVER BE Marty McFly. NOBODY. NOT A ONE. and I like a LOT of new actors.. and there is a LOT of talent out there… but NOBODY can touch this film.
So a try from the foreign land of India doesn’t concern me. If Hollywood EVERY tries it, I might just have to go into hiding out of shame.
LEAVE THIS FRANCHISE ALONE – HOLLYWOOD.
And to India – GO AHEAD AND JUST TRY IT. REALLY.
We’ll laugh you off the globe, losers.
Posted by Alvin Boyett on March 12th, 2009I’m so sick of India doing “remakes.” It’s not a remake, it’s a rip-off! All they do is copy western films? I’m Indian but really, this is getting embarrassing…
Posted by Sasha on May 30th, 2009mmmm……all you people talk about how bollywood rip-off hollywood films….mmm……but why dont you talk about how come all american movies and tv shows are a rip-off of other movies and series from another country?…..your entertainment is just sad……nothing original…you just take everything that could give you some money and do a remake and call it ”american original”…….and the saddest thing is that this will never change and you never gonna find out cause you never gonna see anything that does not have an ”american” label on it….so…yes…bollywood copycat sucks….but take a good look at all your OWN stuff….youre wayyy worst…..sorry about my english…..:)
peace and love bla bla bla blaa

Who invented movies?
Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince (born 28 August 1842, vanished 16 September 1890) was an inventor who is considered by many film historians as the true father of motion pictures, who shot the first moving pictures on paper film using a single lens camera.
A Frenchman who also worked in the United Kingdom and the United States, Le Prince conducted his ground-breaking work in 1888 in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.
In October 1888, Le Prince filmed moving picture sequences Roundhay Garden Scene and a Leeds Bridge street scene using his single-lens camera and Eastman’s paper film. These were several years before the work of competing inventors such as Thomas Edison (whose first motion picture was made in 1891) and Auguste and Louis Lumière (who made their first motion picture in 1892). Roundhay Garden Scene is listed by the Guinness Book of Records and Internet Movie Database as the earliest surviving motion picture.
