Shane Acker’s 9 Trailer: Post-Apocalyptic CG Animation

Four of the top 10 grossing movies of 2008 were computer animated films aimed at a younger crowd. With so much money being made on parents and their kids, it’s easy to see why most CG flicks are cute and inoffensive. Fortunately, there are still a few people out there trying to use the medium for something a little bit different… people like Shane Acker, whose short animated film 9 was nominated for an Oscar back in 2006. Apparently it caught the attention of both Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (Nightwatch, Wanted), and together they helped him get a feature-length version of the film off the ground.
The first trailer for 9 has arrived online, and it looks one epic sci-fi adventure (although that could just be the Coheed and Cambria talking). The movie takes place in a future world where humans no longer exist. 9 is a ragdoll-like creature who must band together with others like him in order to save civilization from the machines that have taken over. The main character is voiced by Elijah Wood, with Crispin Glover, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, and John C. Reilly all contributing their vocal talents as well. What do you think… will this be a huge hit, or will it just be the next Delgo? 9 hits theatres on September 9th, 2009. Watch it in HD over at Apple.com, and check out the original short on YouTube.

The character 9 looks like a slightly less cute version of Sackboy from Little Big Planet.
Posted by Stephen on December 29th, 2008Well I think the fact that we’re seeing a trailer a little less than a year before the release is a good sign. And it actually looks semi-interesting. And it has two fairly successful directors backing it (not like Quentin Tarantino backing anything and everything just for the hell of it)
I watched the original short online yesterday (just google Shane Acker and you should find a link) and it was really cool, even if I couldn’t really make heads or tails about it.
Posted by Dexter Morgan on December 29th, 2008and maybe i should actually read the entire post before i comment – did not see the youtube link at the end
Posted by Dexter Morgan on December 29th, 2008For some reason I have no interest in seeing this film.
Posted by swarez on December 29th, 2008Coheed & Cambria…..YA!
Posted by Baychuk on December 29th, 2008Looking at Sackboy then 9 ummm I mean sure …they’re both sacks but 9 is better i think. Sure sackboy is cute but this film just has so much more depth and character. And I find that just much more entertaining. You can see that in Shane’s short of 9 the animation i thought was wonderful and free especially with no dialogue.
no dissing the cute little sack dood
Anyways this is the first film in a while I’ve really looked forward to.
