Fox Wins Watchmen Lawsuit

As expected, things have been fairly quiet over Christmas in terms of movie news. However just before Christmas, we did actually receive an update to one of the biggest stories of the year: the Fox/Warner Brothers lawsuit over the rights to Watchmen. On Christmas Eve, the judge handed down a ruling that probably would have sparked riots on the streets, if fanboys hadn’t been so busy gorging on turkey, Christmas cookies and egg nog.

Judge Gary A. Feess came to the following conclusion: “Fox owns a copyright interest consisting of, at the very least, the right to distribute the Watchmen motion picture.” The case was scheduled to go to trial in January, but this surprise judgment supersedes the trial, meaning that the two parties must now work towards a settlement instead. So what happens next? Well, a more detailed order is still expected from the judge, but at worst, the release of Watchmen will end up being delayed. However, with so much marketing money already spent, it seems unlikely that Warner Brothers would let this happen if there is any way at all to avoid it. They will probably just hand over a large sum of money to Fox, and if all goes well, the general public will never have to know that any of this even went down. But hey, I’m sure a few dedicated fans will still want to boycott Fox’s next big release… Bride Wars anyone? That’ll show ‘em!

  1. I’m going to boycott anything that contains the word fox–Disney’s “The Fox and the Hound”, Sweet’s “Fox on the Run”, Dr. Seuss’s “Fox in Socks”, Lost’s Matthew Fox, the medieval allegorical figure Reynard the Fox, etc. That will certainly send Fox a clear message.

That sums up my feelings perfectly.

  3. I doubt this will hurt the fans in any real way…at least I hope not.

  4. The movie won’t do as well they think they might break even with production costs and now having to pay fox they loose big. Fox blows
