Monday Morning Box Office Report: Yes Man Outweighs Seven Pounds

In a slightly surprising upset, box office heavyweight Will Smith was defeated by Jim Carrey over the weekend, although both Yes Man and Seven Pounds had somewhat disappointing performances. This is a time of year when people are looking for inoffensive comedies, which probably explains the $18 million gross for Yes Man, although to be fair, inspirational dramas are also a holiday favourite — perhaps Seven Pounds was simply too mysterious. The Tale of Despereaux held down third place with $10.5 million, just sneaking past The Day The Earth Stood Still, while Four Christmases remained in the top 5 with another $7 million. Slumdog Millionaire vaulted into the top 10 with a $3 million weekend, while The Wrestler had an amazing per screen average of $52K (it opened in just 4 theatres).
1. Yes Man — $18.2M
2. Seven Pounds — $16M
3. The Tale of Despereaux — $10.5M
4. The Day the Earth Stood Still — $10.2M
5. Four Christmases — $7.75M
6. Twilight — $5.23M
7. Bolt — $4.26M
8. Slumdog Millionaire — $3.15M
9. Australia — $2.33M
10. Quantum of Solace — $2.15M

This is awesome. Now its just a matter of time until The Wrestler comes back to Toronto and I can actually see it this time.

Posted by Baychuk on December 22nd, 2008every time the Wrestler trailer has played i have almost teared up. its pretty damn effective.
so with that in mind, i’d say i have extremely high expectations. i tend to think i’ll be satisfied anyways.
Posted by Goon on December 22nd, 2008The Wrestler trailer makes me tear up too, Goon, which is not something that usually happens to me in trailers. There’s something brilliant about that Bruce Springsteen song it uses, too.
Posted by Liz on December 22nd, 2008Hello,
Watched Yes Man, and it’s really an amazing to movie to watch. Though Seven Pound has not been released in India, but I am hoping on that too. But Jim Carrey has given a great time after a long time.Goodluck for the movie and to Jim.
