Roger Ebert’s Top 20 Films of 2008

When it comes to year end lists, Roger Ebert’s “best of” is usually a pretty definitive collection of great cinematic achievements from the past 12 months. On Friday he unveiled his Top 20 Films of 2008, and while there aren’t a ton of surprises, there are certainly some great flicks! His list includes many of the heavily anticipated December films that still have yet to hit theatres including Revolutionary Road, Frost/Nixon and The Reader (no The Curious Case of Benjamin Button though).
The biggest surprises in my mind are W. and Iron Man. Also, if you ask me, it’s kind of a cop out that he didn’t put them in order, and also that he listed documentaries separately. Who does he think he is?! Anyway, check out his picks below and follow the link to read his full explanations. How many do you agree with?

Only 5 docs? I don’t even think I even saw 20 movies that came out this year. Half of them are DVDs from ones that came out a few years ago. Planet B-boy was probably my favorite this year.
Posted by joe on December 8th, 2008Didn’t like Frozen River that much. But Admire low budget filmmaker. And hope to join those ranks one day soon. Pretty commerical list. I was expecting more obscure films.
Posted by theman on December 8th, 2008I hope he saw all these movies in their entirety before making this list, and not just the first ten minutes. Nothing really surprising about the list.
Posted by Matt on December 9th, 2008I also find it odd the Docs are seperated out, maybe that was to get more films more love overall. It may have been not the greatest year for film overall but it was an awesome year for docs.
