Monday Morning Box Office Report: Twilight Goes For The Jugular

Women and tweens were out at the movies in full force this weekend, and apparently so were a few others because Twilight had an absolutely gigantic opening weekend, raking in over $70 million — the fourth biggest opening ever in November. The vampire flick even topped Quantum of Solace’s numbers from last weekend; this week Bond notched another $27.4 million, just barely edging out Bolt for the #2 spot. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa was at #4 (and probably stole some of Bolt’s business), while Role Models rounded out the top 5. Slightly lower down on the charts, Mark Herman’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas managed to sneak into the Top 10, despite playing in only 400 theatres.
1. Twilight — $70.6M
2. Quantum of Solace — $27.4M
3. Bolt — $27M
4. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa — $16M
5. Role Models — $7.23M
6. Changeling — $2.64M
7. High School Musical 3: Senior Year — $2.01M
8. Zack and Miri Make a Porno — $1.7M
9. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas — $1.67M
10. The Secret Life of Bees — $1.27M

As crappy as I assume Twilight is, it’s nice to know that studios can’t yet discount the financial clout of a female audience. I also think it’s awesome that Twilight had the biggest opening weekend ever for a female director.
Posted by Liz on November 24th, 2008Shit that’s a lot of money for a crappy vamp movie. I don’t think studios have counted out females. Hell that Titanic movie was super big because of the young teen girls, etc. And their crappy taste is what ruined the music industry.
